Living Room lighting and decor ideas

Hi We are renovating our home and we have extended our living room as per attached plan. Welcoming suggestions on lighting and sitting arrangement. Deliberating whether I should split the space to accommodate dining area as well and use the designated dining room as study or split the lounge space into two sitting areas to accommodate large gathering. Thanks in advance.

What is going to be the focal point in the lounge area? Are you going to have a T.V ?

If you would prefer to have a lot of seating for your gatherings in the main lounge, and, you have a formal dining room, maybe you could have the area at the bottom as a little t.v niche? Not everyone wants the T.V to be prominent.

I think you do need a focal point though or it does become a little like a waiting room with all the furniture around the outside.

The sofa at the top isn't quite working for me, and I know this is just at concept stage, but if you have a sofa that shape all you will see when you come in from the garden is the side of the sofa. The people sitting there have their backs to the garden, whilst those opposite them have no view either as it's blocked by the other end.

I think it's great to have a lovely big family gathering, but you do need to live in the house also when so many people aren't there.

I've given you the large area for entertaining, with a few tweaks, but left you with a little area for yourselves when the family aren't around.

I'd tweak the bottom area further as those doors either side of the wall split aren't symmetrical, plus I kept the Hallway view free of furniture. There's enough space in the lounge are for many people to sit, but if you wanted to bring in a buffet table for special occasions, then you could place it in the middle and let people help themselves and go back to their seats happily

Hi. Is any of the furniture existing? How many do you need to seat? My first thought is to pull sofas away from the walls, you also can't talk to people sat in straight lines nor 20 odd foot across a room. As Hugh said, will there be a tv? Hard to comment re dining room as it's personal, would you actually use a study? If it would only be used rarely I would keep it for a dining table

The sofas are quite domineering so I think you really need a very bright colour to detract from them slightly. I'd go for either a bright yellow or hot pink and team with white and grey. I've posted a pic from homesthetics as an idea. I'd get a really big piece of modern art above the sofa with yellow and black etc. This one is from art.co.uk as no idea of your style. You need some texture on the floor so a grey rug could work, I'd avoid an all yellow rug given the floor colour. I'd move the small bookcase and have a giant angle poise or similar lamp in either black or grey. Bright yellow patterned cushions on the sofa with a couple of plain grey and maybe even a throw. I would personally paint the kitchen cabinets grey and add yellow accessories and update the floor when you can change it. Maybe try a glass coffee table and add some accessories. Can you post some more pics of the room in light as its difficult to tell if the room would take all grey. I'd also flip the table so it's central with the window and add a big yellow bowl or similar.If you don't like yellow then just change the accent colour but I think it needs to be bright. If you want to go modern I would change the mirror, maybe something with a black frame to work with an accent colour.

Hi Danielle. Are your parents literally looking to change everything then?? I can see your mum likes greys and inky blues, which way does the room face? Rather than use the darker paints on the half walls, which I think divides the room, consider using on the fireplace ŵall ( do you have a pic of this?) and under the stairs. I'd keep the other room light for reading.As they have a separate living room, I'd reduce seating, a small 2/3 sofa under the window but pulled away from the ŵall. Full length curtains could look good here but it depends if there's room when the sofa is pulled away, maybe check when you have measurements and go for a slimmer table. I'd keep the curtains light to tie in with ŵall colour. Where the other sofa is have an accent chair in the corner with a floor lamp behind. Where the mirror is I'd put a low wide bookcase with matching table lamps and a mirror over the top. I'd also go for a smaller patterned rug as its hiding the lovely floor. I agree re the porch door but it's letting a lot of light in, maybe they can cover with cardboard and assess the impact! Are there any pendant lights at all? I'd go for an extending dining table so they can accommodate more guests, it looks as if they could pop the extra (smaller) dining chairs in corners? It doesn't look as if full length curtains would hang properly unless the rad was moved? Perhaps a vase of faux flows on the dining table ( good quality!). The art looks good but I don't think the ones next to the window work so would look at some of the positions and maybe create gallery walls. design wise maybe modern English country?? Add the pattern and accent colour in their accessories, soft furnishings. It looks a lovely room though

How about a giant recycled glass vase or bottle filled with fairy lights or better still a group of three. Since recycled glass is imperfect it will reflect the lights beautifully. You can also add other things in with the lights as well for a more subtle feel. Some artificial silk petals would look lovely. Also have a look on eBay or Etsy for vintage finds. I agree with the fairy light trees, I think they look a bit plasticky. Hope you find something lovely, plus the cat looks very comfy there:)

Hi Minnie, thanks for your reply. The paint brand is Johnstone's. My wife also thought Brilliant white might be too cold so we are now considering something with a little bit more warmth, possibly a more 'creamy' colour. The living room faces West, the dining room East - the living room gets the sun in the evening. The paneling would be going around the inside edge of the arch, basically an architrave that wraps the sides and the under edge. I have had it suggested to me that we paint the two window walls and the archway in blue as that will link the rooms together whilst ensuring that the colour is visible regardless of which room you are in or where you are sat? The boards will stay exposed though we are sanding them are treating with a light oak coloured varnish. Furniture wise, the sofa is an beige/mocha fleck colour, dining table is 'shabby chic' wooden top with white legs, Coffee table is wood topped with white legs.

FIY we have another big space of kitchen dining + orangery which we will be using very often, this big lounge will be used mainly when the guests are there, also we need a wall for our home theatre so sofas needs to be sensibly placed. There is a roof lantern at the garden door side.
Options:
1. At the entrance of the lounge I was thinking of
putting small regular sitting area
2. Formal sitting area under the roof lantern corner (back towards the garden door) and projector wall in front of the garden door,
3. or formal dining area either on the garden door corner or on the right corner towards the study

Indecisive...please help

Also need lighting advice ASAP as our builder and electrician waiting for our decision.

I don't think you have nearly as much room as you may think. I started to have a play with this an put it on a proper to scale floor plan.

Using scale items I then put in the Cinema screen and the sofas opposite as they need to be that far back.

As you see when you put in 'to scale' items it shows the actual amount of space you will have. I dislike this as the Sofa dominates the room. So I split it up:-

This leaves enough room at the rear of the seating area for maybe a sideboard and lamp, two armchairs and a coffee table perhaps?

As you already have a formal dining area, I'm sure if I like this arrangement or not ( personal preference ). If you already have a dining room, then i'd keep this as a lovely lounge...only.
