What to do with fireplace? Wood burner?
Comments (5)A real log burner and all the associated cleaning /emptying /starting loading /poking/restarting poking some more /adding just the right logs etc can be a godsend if you want to keep your husband entertained all evening. If however you’d both rather put the fire on and enjoy it then switch it off and go to bed - a ‘non real’ alternative might suit you better. ( price too will be incredibly different in my experience ) If you got rid of it - do you have something particular in mind to put there instead ??...See MoreSecond hand wood burner purchase. Comments (3)Thanks Emily, just awaiting the quote. We have set aside £5,000 so want it to come in within that, but any money saved is a bonus. We know that the installation will be a lot as the chimney needs lining etc....See MoreKitchen Diner & Knock through - with pictures
Comments (6)Wow - fab space to work with! Woodburners and kitchen extractors have clashes in their installation guidelines - so be aware of this when it comes to getting each signed off. Also in general ( although I assume you’ve looked into this before pulling down the wall ) the thermo efficiency of a conservatory isn’t usually up to indoor living conditions - hence most have an outside grade door between inside and the conservatory... so anyone inspired to do this too, after seeing this thread - please get this checked before you start ! Looks a great space and looks like you can still use your kitchen in the short term while you get it planned. I’d echo what Jonathan said re an island - as this can be a good option in a space this size ... but there are also lots of other ways - my advice would be seek out some professional help to create a design that suits the purpose its required for ( ie to be on trend if this is a house you are flipping - or be tailored to your family if this is a long term home etc) There’s a few of us freelance designers on here who charge to design but then you can shop around with ease - or you can approach several shops to get free designs done, but it is harder to compare like for like that way....See Morekeep or ditch a wood burner?
Comments (8)I happily ripped a wood burner out of my last house as I didn’t think it suited the architecture….. in your (likely) Victorian house a cast iron fire surround would be a lovely feature. I also agree with the concerns about how they ruin the air quality in your house. My current house is modern and I chose an electric fire instead. The flames are realistic and beautiful- I can enjoy them even on hot days…. And if my central heating ever went down I could switch the electric heater part of my fire on too....See Morevicki lee
