Can I paint these stairs?
Comments (28)I'm an artist so apologies for focusing on the art... the space looks fantastic and I'm a fan of natural wood also but some of the painted designs above look fantastic too. Your funtiture tonally complimetns the staircase as it is and looks good too and as that is gorgeous strong floor pattern I think it unlikely you're going to be changing that. Personally I would change the rug/carpet at the front of the photo first bringing in something much lighter and simpler and without the intense pattern. I would change the gold frame on your picture also which would benefit from being simpler and lighter too... more contemporary as it were, and the same is true for the clock which needs toning down a bit as black is too strong. Simple to do. At the moment you have gold black and what looks like dark grey framing your wall decorations, once they all tonaly work together you will create space which is much easier on the eye. Whatever you decide to do with the wood will dictate which tones to use. At the moment though there is too much going on.... for me at least. Once you've decided on the above you're possible going to need to change the lamp shade too to fit with your lighter design... again very simple to do. Hope that helps..... Comments (16)Sorry to not agree with everyone else but I don't think these doors look stunning....they look like the stain is uneven and in my opinion so dark that the wood doesn't look like the natural product it once was. If you like the dark look then I would see if I could have them professionally finished and try to get an even polished wood look if you want to make the wood look more expensive. Alternatively strip back the wax/ stain so that the original wood graining is more authentic..... You will likely find that the architrave is different wood to the door so you might end up painting it so it matches something (likely the skirting boards). If this was my house I wouldn't hesitate to paint everything as in my opinion this is likely a softwood that was intended to have a painted finish. I would paint the architrave to match the skirtings and then I would paint the doors one or two shades darker....See Morecan i paint matt wood paint on top of recently painted gloss ?
Comments (5)I personally would not as it might 'peel', it might not, but better safe than sorry. Let the paint thoroughly dry and if it's the same base ie Acrylic, which is most likely these days, then sand and re-paint. If you do not wish to sand, or they are different bases, then wait for the paint to thoroughly dry and then use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer or even Zinsser Peel Stop to go over the gloss and then paint with the Matt....See MoreStaircase: To paint or not to paint...
Comments (18)I think I would try stripping it back as a first step. This will make the wood a little lighter and take the sheen off. The craftsmanship is beautiful and it would be a pity to jump straight to paint. You could try Painting the walls a soft colour that compliments the wood and use light coloured rug/runner to brighten things up? Strategic lighting would also help, a statement crystal chandelier in the Hall to catch daylight, maybe some wall mounted down lighters up the stairs to create soft mood lighting? It’s difficult to see the condition of the parquet - is that a board over it, or do you need to replace it? If so you could go for a light and bright patterned tile floor in a design ‘of the period’. If that doesn’t appeal and you decide to paint I would probably not choose white, as you will likely have to paint the big double doors in the same colour and white will not look as nice as say a pale grey would with that lovely stained glass you’ve got....See MoreAnnMarie 73659
