Kitchen islands: which shape is best?

At Stoneham we have a range of different styles of kitchen island, to suit every taste. Out of these popular choices, which one do you think is conducive to creating the perfect social dining space?

Long rectangular island from the Penshurst Painted range

Round island from the Strata range

Oval island from the Lullingstone range

I think it depends on the size and shape of the kitchen.

In our previous house we had an octagonal island which worked perfectly and looked great.

I actually prefer the layout you've got at the moment (sorry!) with your table in the kitchen. Moving it to between the rooms looks really tight. Why not just redo your kitchen to get more functional space. You could maybe block up the door. Another possible option may be to move the wc and utility into the current garage, then you could knock through and double the size of your kitchen (and fit in an island!!).

As others say, it's completely dependent on the space and how you use it. For me, I'm choosing to have the hob on the island, so that it's more sociable for me when I'm cooking, and I don't have my back to everyone/everything also useful for keeping an eye on kids if we end up having them. Like Daisy, I'm having a TV put on the wall so I can watch whilst cooking We're making sure we'll have our seating at the opposite end of the island for safety We also did not want the mess of the sink and washing up on the island as whilst we do have a dishwasher, I prefer to wash certain things by hand anyway.
