farmhouse colour scheme

Hi,

Hoping someone can help. Thinking colours for farmhouse we are renovating. Fixtures are the next thing so don’t want it to not look right.
Rooms- front internal porch leads to large living room with office area. Dark and very low ceiling. From there a very narrow snug room same ceiling height as living room spiral stairs up to 2nd floor and hallway to 2nd seating room/cinema/man cave and to large kitchen with breakfast nook. Off from kitchen we have utility and downstairs shower room again low ceiling. Shower room has no window. Back Door off from kitchen which we will use instead of the front.
Upstairs on the stairs a very narrow long bathroom with a sloped ceiling velux windows, top of stairs we have 3 bedrooms (teenage girl, 7 yr old boy and me and the grafter.) in the sun bedroom it has front and back aspect and a tiny en-suite.
Daughter wants white, pale pink, grey and a gold sort of colour.

7yr old is Xbox, switch mad so was thinking denim and stickers around gaming including YouTube logo. His fav colour is red which leads mean to red/white/blue theme!
All bedrooms have vaulted ceilings and landing is sloping downwards as does bathroom.

Colours I really like I worry might not suit. I love vintage/rustic and never done before as always been in modern houses where gone more contemporary.

Here goes- quite a few and in no particular order
Midnight blue, teal, white, grey, gold, black,forest green, sage (I like most green!) pinks, mauve, lilac (need as that’s my Xmas decks!!) and mustard. I love neutrals and although neutrals suit farmhouse I would like to have a pop of colour. However I worried my colour pallet will make house very mismatched and would love a subtle flow with colour changes.

Any ideas? I am finding that I have too many colours for any searches I do on net so hard to know if they will work and transition well.

We live in an 1850 old workers cottage. It's been extended to just over double the size it once was, but it still retains all of it's old features. Two fireplaces, lovely old walls and wobbly ceilings, some exposed brick etc.

I find that some of the best old cottages ( which can be dark ), look great when all the internal walls ( except for the odd feature wall ), are all the same shade. Accesorise as you will with any colour you like, but keep all the walls and doors the same.

We currently have Clunch on every wall and French Gray on the doors. The whole of downstairs is accessorised with mustard and grey and the bedrooms and attic all have their own vibes. This way, we feel and obviously it's all down to personal preference, that the house is light and airy and flows really well from room to room.

Sounds lovely. Did think of using my less than neutral likes as accent colours rather than main. My biggest desire was a rich teal gold and white bathroom- very luxurious but not at all farmhouse rustic! Think as much as I would like, it is important to keep in mind the type of property it is and not force it to be something it is not. Ours dates back to 1600’s. We were going to double it’s size (we built a house on a house at our previous place!) and we wanted to keep a lot of the features but unfortunately it has been so bodged by previous “jack of all” that it needed serious work and investment to get it safe to live in. My dream has had some serious alterations to try and finish the house which is debatable at the moment. I live in hope and surround myself with colour ideas and diy tutorials that could help save the pennies!!!

I like both of these colour combinations for the kitchen. However, I voted white and gold cause that is what I saw on the dress. I need to stop thinking about that dress now cause it hurts my head. :-)

I agree that you need to decide on your colours based on what you already have. I would get a colour chart from one paint manufacturer and decide on a good white that you can use again and again plus a nearly white and two light neutrals and 2 darker neutrals. Then choose 4 colours that are similar and work with what you already have. The idea is to have a bunch of colours that all work with each other and to set out some rules to work with and then use the rules for every room. Having a continuous colour palate each room will feel like it has come from the same imagination plus it gives a more luxurious feel. This way it doesn't matter which order you paint in as you have a plan of the end result- plus there is less wastage when you use the same paint in different rooms although with different light and different complimentary colours it will feel different in different rooms.

Hi Kate Home-Roberts, It will probably be the last thing that goes into the project but maybe one of the most important, wood flooring could be a perfect addition to the project? Where ( roughly) is your farmhouse ? As the ‘colour’ of the daylight will have an effect in the colours too ... ie ... in Dorset I’ve used base colours of white, taupes and warm greys.
Where as in Scotland I’ve used warmer creams and more orange based colours to add more warmth.
Then in hotter climates like the med... Whites and cool blues and greens.

I think you can go to town as they say with kitchens and bathrooms. As long as they fit in with the rest of the house, then of course you should have luxury and colour. Teal, gold and white will be great for the bathroom, you can make it fit with the rest of the house with the type of fittings you use, free standing baths, fancy traditional vanities etc.

We are just finishing our main bathroom this week...........it's been a slog..........the little bit of wall that's on show ( not a lot ), is still clunch, but the tiles are stunning, we have an oblong freestanding bath painted in f&b railings, with white Lion feet . Although we have the traditional bath and vanity, the walk in Shower is definitely very modern in it's look, but with traditional fittings. Must get round to posting the pics.............still painting doors. If I get off Houzz for a while i might finish faster!

I would purchase these two items, 'Modern Rustic' by Emily Henson and the current issue of Country Living Modern Rustic which you can buy in M&S or online. Both show beautiful interiors where the colour really relates to materials. Most of the colours you mention are featured but the real focus is on how to balance texture with colour.

I live north west Cumbria. Farmhouse is on a main busy A road (hence why we won’t use front door and we can use back via off-road to farm track.) I think we are north west facing.Downstairs at front- lounge with low ceilings (7ft) has two windows to the front but it is dark. The 2nd seating room is also at the front but is a lot lighter I’m guessing because it is normal height. Windows in lounge are normal size in height and reach the top of ceiling (no way to fit curtain pole) Upstairs all bedroom are at front and although vaulted the windows are very low placed (mid calf) upstairs is lighter except bathroom as only 1 tiny window but we are blocking that up and raising roof height so room is usable and putting a velux in possibly two.
