Desperate for help with lounge colour scheme

I need help. Excuse this picture my room looks a mess at the moment. I have two large sofas, which I can't afford to change. Also the floor isn't something I'm happy with - a dark red toned expensive laminate - but these are things I'm stuck with due to lack of funds. I'm looking for a colour for the walls - this colour is F&B charleston grey and it's terrible with the furniture. Not at all as it had seemed with the tester pot. I've tried out some darker colours but these two look rubbish too. I have a white fireplace and a black fire.
Can anybody suggest a good paint colour to go with my sofa and floor? I can make new curtains to suit anything. Many thanks in advance - I really am becoming quite desperate now.

10 years agoHi Caroline, thanks for taking the time to chat to me. I have lovely bay windows - it's a double fronted Victorian House. The low evening sun is streaming through them now so I can't get a picture. Here's the fire though. I'm actually thinking of a pale grey/blue. It would complement the gold and keep the room light. These dark colours make it feel depressing as it's west facing. What do you reckon?

Comments (7)Hi Angela, I think I would look at a modern grey and white look. Maybe with a darker green used in a few accessories and plants which will soften the design look (important with hard floors). If you don't have furniture then maybe consider a single room redesign interior design service. Comments (15)Hi there! I would use the paper - it looks lovely behind the sofa and this is a big room that can take the pattern - you might find it difficult to fill with other things! Can you get matching roman blind made for the window? And maybe a plain silk curtain for the doors. The colours you’ve picked are light and fresh - perfect for a room well lit with natural light. You will probably need lots of lamplight in the evenings to keep it looking good. I would pick a light grey or beige for the other walls, that tones with the wallpaper and personally I would not go for a grey rug, I would brighten the floor area with a cream rug, not so practical, perhaps, but it will really give some love to the natural light in the room. Comments (31)For what it's worth I agree with Jonathan. Your palette is neutral and can be jazzed up with any colours really. Which of course makes it harder as there's so much choice ! He's put that great idea forward of finding a patterned item you love as a starting point and then picking a colour/colours from there. I think that would definitely help. I can recommend Farrow & Ball colours. Expensive, but worth it. As you well know, do invest in testing colours out first.

10 years agoI like your floor, and the couch and the mirror. and the ceiling, and the fireplace. I would move away from the teal and into a more monochrome Darker Gray, almost black. From the two on the wall I would pick the one on the right side... so you will have the beautiful white pop against it, and the floor wont compete with the sofa..
[houzz=] The Couch could play off some brass accessories, you need a large beautiful painting on the wall... get rid of all the pillows, and get a couple sturdy graphic ones..

10 years agoI don't believe that SW is available in the UK. I was looking at F&B colours and Chappel Green looks a bit like Rookwood Blue Green? Mind you, I can only judge the colours on screen and I know that particularly F&B colours can look very different in real life.
I've also tried SW-Stolen Kiss (F&B Radicchio?).

If SW is not available in UK could it be a color match available somehow? It would be so easy to send you some paper paint strips ( I' m not sure how they are called)
Then you could play with light blue or light teal accents and layers of cream/ivory
or keep it neutral with layers of ivory, cream, sepia

10 years agolast modified: 10 years agoThank you all so much for your wonderful help. I thought I'd put the finished result up so you can all see (the light doesn't hit this window until after lunch so excuse the darkness of the shots compared to last time).
I changed the wall colour to Farrow and Ball French Gray for three walls (seen to the left) and feature wall in F&B Charleston Grey.
I changed the suite - nothing worked with it so I sold it on ebay and and bought two 7ft long leather square sofas which work with the floor not against it. I bought a book case too and added art to the walls. I now have full length cream linen curtains and blinds and have cleared the bay window space with just a small table and a beautiful french jug with flowers. It now has a lovely restful and spacious feel and I've gone from it being my least favourite to one of my favourite rooms on the house. Was so nice to have your ideas.

10 years agoOkay team - the deed is done. I can't tell you how delighted my long suffering husband was when I gave him his new instructions, but like it a lot better. So what do you reckon? Worth it?
