Dark And drab... where’s the curb appeal?!
I’m looking at ideas on how I can improve the curb appeal of my house? I’m looking at short and long term solutions for windows and door, stonework and walls, paving, railings, and garden plantation. I love the Edwardian era and I am keen to retain/emphasise period parts of the house but also encorporate contemporary look, unsure of how I can combine both well in the look of the front of my house. Any advice?!

PRO6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI love it’s character. A few things you can try:
1. Try and clean the moss from the canopy bit above the window
2. Paint the front door. A good primer like zinsser bulls eye and farrow and balls exterior eggshell paint in hardwick white or pigeon or French grey. Brick pairs well with a green based colour.
3. You can also paint the window frames.
4. Repair and paint the steps and dwarf wall ( not white, a coulour resembling stone and complementing the brick and new front door colour)
5. Plant a climbing rose in a large pot and train it to go in the pipe and across the wall between the ground and first floor windows.
6 add topiary or bay plants for year round greenery

Comments (85)Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . Comments (17)I’ve always loved shutters and was considering to install them in our two big bay windows. However, the front of our house faces a greenery and a quiet walkway, so there was no need for them after all. A few of my friends bought them though, and I can’t help myself but to admire their shutters every time I visit. The issue of a proximity to a busy road was sorted out in two houses by the shutters.
