Recommendations please contract administrator or not on a new build?

We are building a new home, have planning, have chosen our contractor but are in two minds - get a contract administrator or not. We have been quoted between £8k and £10k for monthly certifications, the odd architects instruction for variations to the contract, monthly inspections, the odd bit of design work and coordination as it crops up. We are already on a v tight budget so would rather not but feel with our lack of building experience it is probably good practise? Or if we keep a close eye on everything can we do the same job and save ourselves a decent wedge of cash?
