What is the dimensions of the cedar?

I'd like to put cedar on a porch ceiling and was thinking of a 1/4" or 1/2" thick, 1-2" wide cedar planks. Is that what you did? Is this called bead board?

Hi Darrell. Yes, we used Western Red Cedar in 5/4" x 4" beadboard, tongue and groove planks.

If you are thinking to tuck a chair under so that’s out of the way, I would perhaps go He length of a chair and just over, to give room to put things on the desk itself. I measured my standard minimal but comfy dining chair and that was 40cm excluding the backrest. So perhaps go 45cm wide? Also think about using a ‘leggy’ chair, just like in the photo so it doesn’t take much visual space.

Very marginal for me. I think I'd go with vertical as I find the horizontal boards under the overhang a bit busy, it also goes with the doors and windows but contrasts with the stone. I do however like the horizontal lines next to the door as the door doesn't stand out quite so much to me with the vertical planks :)

Obobble and Suzanne C, thanks for the comments. I think the idea of putting the shower and toilet along the right hand wall is a good idea. Do you think there would be room if I put the vanity unit parallel on the opposite left hand wall, rather than underneath the window? (Sorry I like the idea of having a mirror in front of me rather than the window obobble!) Also what do people think are comfortable dimensions for a spacious walk in shower? If I put the shower in the back right hand corner then I’m not tied so much by the width of the window I think as it won’t jut up next to it? Ie it could be wider that 76.5cm?

The wood ceilings are unusual and give your house character. I’d want to be very sure before removing them. Looking at the photos (which may be deceptive, you’re the best judge of that) it looks like the wood has a sheen/varnish. Personally I’m not a fan of this - I think they would look much better with a matte finish. I would also consider staining them to mitigate the yellow tint. Or, if you have the height and budget, you could break the continuity by introducing black beams to add more interest up there. There’s an example of black beams on this page https://www.digsdigs.com/wooden-ceiling-ideas/ Having said that, I would start by reducing the size of the fireplace, which looks overwhelming and dated. Whether you want to keep it in red brick, or give it a more modern look by painting the brick in white or black, is up to you. Personally I’d go black, but it’s a matter of personal taste. It would make the ceilings even more impactful and would be a good background to your furniture and art. I would also definitely change the curtains to some that touch the floor - the current ones are too short and that’s immediately what the eye is drawn to. They need to gently kiss the floor.
