How to make my living room more homely

We are currently living in a rented flat and I’m still not happy with our living room, we’re able to paint but I’m not sure what colour would work best. I feel like the walls are very bare but I don’t know how to make it more homely. Also we don’t have a dining room so we have our dining table in the living room and i feel as if it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the room. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

5 years agoColour and texture will warm up the room. Pictures, cushions , rugs and accessories will help. You don’t
need a lot ..a few changes will make a huge difference. Don’t try to ‘ match’ things use what you like as that will make the room feel like it’s yours! Added a couple of pictures from 2 of the houses I’ve lived in...

Comments (13)Can't tell exactly from the pics but could the two sofas be brought closer together positioned facing each other with a coffee table inbetween and the tv then put underneath the stairs? Would there be enough room to walk from the door through to the back room? It would make a nice seating area on the rug which you could change to a bold geometric monotone one if budget allows. Then some bold complimentary cushions also in monotones for the sofas and I agree with the pops of orange. I don't think it would matter if the sofas went right up to the present tv wall. At the moment everything seems to be pushed to the furthest extremes. Then you could have a table/desk or the pine cabinet under the window. I would paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint which is very easy because you do not have to sand or undercoat and you can finish it with just a wipe of her wax which gives a nice finish. Paris grey is a good neutral colour. You could paint the wall with it also. (Sorry but I don't like the wallpaper sample. It looks too bedroomy to me.) If you are ever in a position to do so I would have the chimney breast removed because it has no purpose, takes up valuable space and is off centre as well. The wall facing the stairs would look nice a medium grey and needs a wow factor with a collection of some colourful or big art. I don't think the mirror works there. It just accentuates how the chimney breast is off centre. I would put pictures above the whole seating area on both the chimney breast and the wall to the right of it to centre the whole look. This makes limited spaces feel congested. However, the 'old fashioned' look is simply the result of practically all of the furnishings (apart from the television) looking very traditional. To make your living room feel more spacious and contemporary, I'd suggest introducing some colour contrast, improving lighting, and replacing whatever heavy furniture you can afford to with more open, lighter-looking pieces. Reduce the number of cushions and replace their covers with one or two plain, strongly coloured fabrics. Perhaps carry the fabric through into new curtains when your budget allows. Try some dramatic lighting of dark corners to make the space feel bigger. Comments (9)I think the sofa and t.v cabinet are too near the long windows, they'd be best moved central to the wall on the left. The cabinet with the books isn't helping as it doesn't match so well with the rest of the contemporary furniture that you have and it's throwing of the centralisation of the T.V and sofa. Maybe a ceiling height narrow bookcase would be easier to fit it. At the moment, the furniture kind of lines the walls and all is pushed to near to the windows. It actually looks like quite a nice big space. I just think some of the furniture isn't helping. If you can buy cabinets with doors on, then you don't look at clutter as it's closed in, this makes the spaces look larger. Comments (22)I think something like in the below picture would look great. The dining set here would look great too. Add a white or cream large shaggy rug for warmth and brightness in front of the sofa. Darlings Maltino White Rug Add dark purple floor length curtains in a translucent fabric, a glass or mirror pr acrylic coffee table and a large mirror on the wall behind the sofa. Maybe replace the sofa with a model such as our Delamere in a light purple velvet or any light colour fabric, we have 100's to choose from. 5 years agoIt would be great to see a plan of the whole room, but I agree as above, move the table to the bay, face the T.V to the fireplace and put the t.v in one of the alcoves.
I'm guessing that the sofa might be where it is as it's too big to fit anywhere else? Maybe it can spin round? The mirror is a little undersized for the fireplace, but you could get another storage cube to match the other side. In an ideal world, i'd go for something that fills the spaces.
