Redesigning kitchen - open plan to staircase or close off? Suggestions
Comments (10)Hello r1haz, I thought you might be removing the walls there.. Definitely don't block off the staircase... It is stylish and still practical... Just depends how you look at the idea of practical... It's actually more practical to do less and achieve more.!.. In the sense that I think you actually prefer the open plan idea...... It's less work as you're not adding to the work load with removal of downstairs walls....... Possibly increase the extraction element to the kitchen area and make sure the doors have good seals in the bedrooms... Nice looking stair treads can also work with the painted style which will really lend to the less solid feel. Open is preferable to dark and narrow, but you must do what you feel is the right thing... .... .. : ) )...See MoreWall colour question
Comments (10)Hi Lucy, Sounds like you have a big renovation on your hands - how exciting! With open-plan spaces there can be a lot to consider such as lighting, furniture that you have kept, and creating a space that you can fully enjoy. As a suggestion, why not try Dulux Dusted Moss 4 from the Dulux Colour Mixing range? This is a wonderful calming neutral tone which will work wonderfully on enhancing your room’s natural light, so great for open-plan spaces. Use this in our Dulux Matt emulsion paint to give your walls a smooth and sophisticated feel. To add in a contemporary twist, try the slightly darker shade Dulux Dusted Moss 2 in Satinwood finish for your skirting and wooden trims. The subtle vintage muted green undertone of the colour will beautifully compliment your lovely sofa, as well as bring out the warm rich wooden tones of your flooring and staircase. We love how this image shows this paint effect perfectly… http://goo.gl/zMCqcP If you want to try these colours, they can be mixed up in tester pots – which allows you to try before you commit. Complete your scheme by adorning your space with accessories you love. For a dramatic take on the Scandi style; introduce items with charcoal greys, vintage greens and deep purple tones, mixing textures and patterns creating a fab cohesive look and feel. Below are some hand selected pieces which would look great - we love the rich plush velvet cushions from John Lewis. Comments (19)I’d paint it - maybe 2 tone as some of the comments suggest. I did mine this summer, absolutely love how stylish it looks. I used chalk paint which needed no undercoat (some mahogany coloured stain previously) - although the grey took better than the white. Your stair gate suggest kids, I have 3 small ones and a few chips have appeared on mine, but overall I’m pleased with it. It gets a lot of comments when people come over. (We also need new carpet but holding off until the youngest gets potty trained)...See MoreWhere could i fit a bathroom upstairs?
Comments (12)Looking at the ground floor (which I know you haven't asked about!), I'd be tempted to keep the loo and turn part of the kitchen into a utility and then have the kitchen in the space where the current bath and reception one are and open plan to dining room area where it is currently. That would mean you wouldn't have to move the soil stack (and could possibly lay the upstairs out so the loo up there was against the same wall) and would gain a utility which is handy to hide stuff away if you go more open plan....See MoreJonathan
