Design Dilemma Fireplaces

To paint or not to paint Fire surround?

We have a mahogany fire surround with marble insert & hearth. I would like to refresh the room. I'm not changing any of the furniture curtains or carpet. But was thinking of painting the fire surround & redecorating the while room. It is a north facing room. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

If you was to get a grey or white coffee table then I would suggest painting it grey or white

Is it real mahogany or stained in that colour? If the latter, I’d certainly consider painting.

Its colour is already different to your other furniture (which looks nice as it is) so that’s not really an issue, I feel.

We do have a Steptoe's up here not far from us but it's (dare I say it) wretched! Dark, not clean, badly organised. The one near you, though, AMAZING! We go down every year and take two big cars (we have a Picasso and our friends who live in Devon have a Forester), lol, fill them to the brim every year:) Last year we ended up shipping a lot of it back to Scotland as otherwise we wouldn't have got us, the luggage, and the Roo in to go home!

Defo looks original (we have v.similar definitely original in our 1914 house) - will be slate. Can strip (also original) paint effect off (takes ages but worth it (use Home strip paint & varnish remover), then seal slate - looks lovely.

Hi Fiona, There's no tiles? I can't see any on the picture... What does the rest of your room look like in terms of style, colours, etc? Is it / will it be similar to your inspiration pictures? Personally I favour keeping architectural details as close to the original as possible so I would vote for restoration, and a bit of modernisation with the tiles and the colour of the wall. I do think that once restored it will be a beautiful piece and can be put forward with the rest of your decoration. Have a nice evening Mehdia

Yes I’d paint it. Probably thinking a shade of grey, but depending what you choose for your walls

I'd paint, the obvious colour would be black. I think the room needs softening though so i'd add in a pale mustard and grey rug . Change the picture over the fire for a mirror.

Your room is lovely and I really like the black coffee table and side table. Black always lifts a neutral room. The fireplace surround is nice, but I think it would be better painted white, or for more drama, black. A rug would be nice but I don’t think the room really needs one, and i love a rug!
