What to do with concrete slab

I am planning on taking up the carpet in my dining room and stripping the floorboards. Where the hearth used to be is a concrete slab that is flush with the boards and I'm wondering what to do with it. I don't want to make much of a mess, not sure how tricky it would be to take out and replace with something nicer like stone or matching boards. What would people recommend? I don't want to cover it and introduce a step since the dining chairs need to slide over it. Thanks!

The easiest solution is to put a new floor over the whole lot. I would choose an engineered wood.

.........or have the concrete slab removed and some reclaimed same size boards fitted ......a good joiner/ craftsman will be able to do both. We have done this numerous times in various properties and if the original floor is in good condition think it would be cost effective.

Hello Pelagia, I must say I love concrete and it works in both kitchens and bathrooms beautifully! Textured or smooth. Plaster too is an absolute favourite as is terrazzo and all would work together. I would like to suggest these ideas which I think compliment. The other thing of course is to consider how you can carry concrete throughout to create a seamless home. So it forms a coherent material language if you will. It doesn't have to be in large ways it could be in the form of accessories, for example. This first image is mine and includes walls, flooring and worktop to compliment what is actually brass cabinetry with some mid century brass table/chairs and Murano glass. The idea behind it is to create a room in its own right. That is less "kitcheny" in visual appearance and more a functioning beautiful space that you could entertain in as much as you could cook in. Size being key here, of course. You could add concrete shelving etc but I have left the scheme as is to fit the aesthetic. This is just one half of a much larger room but you get the idea. This second I found on the web. I am not partial to mirrored cabinetry but the bathroom has lovely qualities which I think compliment my kitchen design. Some ideas for you to consider. Beautiful accessories and natural earthy elements compliment wonderfully as do a mix of materials, wood, slate and stone. Either way, enjoy what you decide. AJ

Budget ideas is clean the walls and paint them. Clean the paving. Buy a few pots (the bigger the better) and fill with plants, either summer bedding which can be enjoyed all summer long then discharged, or buy some shrubs (plant nurseries and markets are cheaper) and plant them up. The greenery will cheer it up no end. You can buy cheaper pots from Wilkos or B&Q (Plastic is usually the cheapest option). If you want to clad the walls with planks of wood but in an economical way, you could buy used scaffold boards which you can then paint or keep natural. Courtyard gardens are often my favourite, so you can do this! Below are some examples of scaffold boards used in gardens.

Jonathan, I'd go down the outdoor rugs idea, like Sonia suggested, though I've not had a look recently. There's a corner ground flat near where I live that used to be a shop so had lots of windows. It got filled in with concrete and painted. But the paint didn't last long. It bubbled up and flaked off, so it looks a mess. The surface is totally different. So it' may well be cheaper but there'd be more work to do. Regards Nicky

I would go with Tamp75’s suggestion and paint the wall black. Jet wash the wall, repair any cracks or damage and then cover with masonry paint. Add some trellis panels at regular intervals along the length to create rhythm. I recently made my own from roofing lats which are cheap to buy (see photo of my effort using the plan). Leave them in natural wood and plant climbers to grow up them. You already have a lot of plants, you just need to redefine your border. You could add some plants in an acid green colour (eg Acer Jordan, Choicya Sundance etc) that will really pop against the wall. Good luck.

I would also remove the concrete slab and then lay some floorboards flush with the existing ones.
You might be able to ‘steal ‘ a couple of boards from one of your bedrooms if they are hidden under a carpet! (Of course, replacing the bedroom boards with cheap new ones, as they wouldn’t show under a carpet!)
At least, once sanded, they will look exactly the same!
