Paint Design Dilemma Kitchens

What colour kitchen walls? Grey units/oak worktops

Hi All,

I recently had a new kitchen installed as per photos below. I've since painted it a turquoise colour but for some reason it seems to jar with the grey units/oak tops. There is a large expanse of bare wall on the right hand side which perhaps doesn't help (white table only temporary!)

Anyone have any ideas for colour schemes, or even combinations of colours?

Steve! You already have colors to go with. It is your floor tile. Counter-top repeats a yellow/orange. Now you get gray tone from your tile for walls. I think go with blue/gray would work better.

For me the turquoise doesn’t go with the door colour. I also have a dove grey kitchen and my walls are a veryyy light shade of grey. For me it suits well.

I'd try a blue or green with more grey tones. Maybe look at Pidgeon, Cromarty and Mizzle by Farrow and Ball?

Thanks again Deirdre ... oops ... I overlooked your question about the direction! The kitchen is south facing so it should be ok. I know what you mean about grey being a cleaner look and I do love it with white but was just thinking that it may all look too stark. Having said that I do have floor space for a good sized lime green rug that I own and if I had a window blind made in the same colour then perhaps that would work. I also have 3 lime green ceramic pots/vases which I love and they could sit on the windowsill too. That would then be enough colour accent to lift it I think. Oh decisions, decisions ... :) Will post again once I'm in and have done the deed. Thanks to everyone again for your time.

I agree- I think it is the blue tones that don’t work. Either change to a sage green or olive green (so more green, less blue)or go for a neutral. Silver greys are elegant. I think you could also consider a neutral with brown tones such as Farrow and Balls- Mouse’s Back.

I have Cromarty in my office and Mizzle on my hall, stairs and landing. I love both colours but did test them out in various places before painting all of it.

Cromarty is lighter than Mizzle. Mizzle is a bit of a strange colour. In the position we have ours it various in colour according to the time of time. In the hall it looks blue/grey sometimes, then at other times green/grey (which its supposed to be), up the stairs Is a definite pale blue undertone and the landing is more of a darker green/grey.

I guess what I'm saying is just be careful with anything that has grey tones in it. Even blue/greys and green/greys. They differ to the eye according to the light that’s showing. Also Farrow & Ball paint and testers are expensive so I took the colour chart to our local Johnstones Decorator Centre who computer colour match and I’ve never had any problems with their paint especially the dry line problems.

We have similar units to yours and we have painted our kitchen Carnforth White from farrow and ball,it looks lovely.

You do not need to much color with door. I show you different tones of gray/blue. IMO middle tone (first pic) woks better.

Hi Steve,

Really nice kitchen. You could piant it in white and add feature wall, go yellow or red. Those colours would work best with the brown tiles and worktops as well as units.

In my opinion it is the saturation level of the paint that is the problem. The beauty of your kitchen is the natural flooring and the wooden worktops, it looks earthy. This is swamped by the blue paint, it just looks wrong. Without seeing the cupboard door colours close up it is tricky but I would suggest looking for something a bit darker than the cupboards but with the same hue. If you want a strong contrasting wall a deep olive green would work as it would balance the wood and the purpley greys.

Deep olive would work too. But if choose between gray/blue and olive I would go with gray/blue.

I think the best idea is to go with off white and one feature wall with color.

i'd go with a warm neutral. Think a colour on the wall closes the kitchen in too much. And a couple of framed posters on the long wall will break that long wall up and add personality and interest.

Thanks very much for the input folks, I think it's probably the combination of the blue clashing and the sheer size of the left hand wall. If I went an off-white/light grey for all except the cooker wall, what would look good as a feature colour there? I was thinking Green or darker Grey but would a warm colour also work, tying in with the floor/worktops? Thanks

Steve, I once painted my hall, stairs and landing turquoise. It looked awful! What was I thinking? I then got the decorator back to redo it in Almond White and peace was once again restored! I bet we all have decorating disasters. Your kitchen is so beautiful - that floor. I would go a soft neutral, one of the colours in your floor. I really don’t think it needs anything bold at all.
