Aga's clearance question !?!
Comments (54)I can give you the opinion on clearance reduction as most US codes and testing agencies see it. http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/icod/irc/2012/icod_irc_2012_24_sec007.htm The short story is that a 1" air gap is required behind the heat shield, and something more substantial than foil. TABLE G2409.2 (308.2) REDUCTION OF CLEARANCES WITH SPECIFIED FORMS OF PROTECTION Should give you a good idea of what "should" be an acceptable means of reducing clearance. Think of it as a double boiler system. If you put a pan directly on the heat, you can burn things very easily. But, if you put one pan inside another with boiling water, then it keeps things from getting too hot....See MorePutting a sofa in front of a window – Lounge layout dilemma
Comments (13)At the moment I never watch TV in the daytime, so glare isn’t a problem. And that window faces North so I don't think it would ever be a big issue.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Not a fan of having it where the previous owners did. It dominates the room too much. I'd like the fireplace to be the main focal point in the room rather than the telly. If I have it on the cabinet (Option 2) I was thinking of building in an automatic TV lift so it disappears from view. I've got plans downloaded from the internet and it looks like a good weekend DIY project!...See MoreNeed affordable living room sprucing up
Comments (20)The shelf above your sofa is a key space to add some colour or some statement pieces that would bring your room to life. I assume you can see that shelf as you look down from the kitchen to the sitting room. Firstly, I would stand the books on the shelf vertically and have the plant pot by the side, this would give some more height. Have a look at our project boards for some art print ideas and you can find some bargain frames from ikea and most supermarkets, this will make that shelf space look really special. Bringing a colourful print will highlight your black and white picture that you have already. Little changes and you will make your space look amazing!...See MoreTv above gas fire?
Comments (19)The unfortunate truth is the TV and fireplace are both competing for the same space and any solution is a compromise. Regardless of your desire for a fire it is bad anatomically to hang a TV too high. There is plenty of information online about the best viewing height and viewing distances for different sizes of TV. All this advice is ignored by many people - including professional interior designers. Looking at the design of fireplace you supplied perhaps you could bring a TV into the room and place it on the raised hearth when you want to watch it? My bet is that is the arrangement you would normally live with and then you would remove the TV from your room when you have guests? Or you could put a TV on a mobile stand that you can place in position when you want to watch it? You can get stands that would also take a SKY box or similar. The problem is trailing cables - and where the stand is positioned when not in front of the fire! You can even get devices that enable TVs to rise from the floor but they’re very expensive. Or you could project onto a screen that unfolds from the ceiling. Also very expensive. In my case, I opted to forgoe the fireplace, knowing the TV played a more important part in my everyday life. The room was then designed accordingly. Am I happy with the result? Yes and no but as I said at the beginning any solution - other than a separate TV room - is a matter of compromise....See MoreLucy Orton
