I have an old fashioned dado rail in hall and up stairway how do I mak
Comments (8)I would make a feature of it; it adds character and structure and takes the eye sweepingly along and up which is good for adding a sense of space. Could you paint it a colour that ties in with something else - the flooring or a rug, for example? Or you could put patterned wallpaper or a different colour paint below and a lighter shade above it. You could also hang pictures in the feature shapes above though if they aren't original I'd be tempted to get rid of them. I'd move away from the rather feminine and twee decoration and make it bolder, stronger....See MoreDado rails or not?
Comments (8)Hi Hutsly, Thank you for giving your opinion which has been very useful. In the 1st, 3rd and 4th pictures, there is a shelf halfway up the stairs. Behind the piece of decorative skirting that forms the side of the shelf was housed a lot of the pipes for the house. I expect that this was a later addition but most of the houses up the street, which are identical, have something similar here. There is a mix of some of the houses in the street having dado rails and others not so we have assumed that they were original to the houses. We are trying to do the house up as sympathetically as possible, hence the refurbished leaded lights on the 2nd floor landing (picture 2). It is just difficult to decide whether today they just look out of place and should therefore be excluded or whether to be true to how the house was originally....See MorePlasterers have messed up... Comments (9)My first comment would be that whoever decided the place the Velux window there did not think about this carefully enough and if this is an architect/designer then I would seek a suitable solution from them. I also believe that Minipie's suggestion is the only practical solution available to you , i.e. the rectangular section should be angled down enough so that the line can be achieved in one piece. This will need some messing around with the plasterboard, but it is a simple fix. You will obvious need to do this with the other Velux window so that they match up. As a comment the skill of your plasterers, I would never accept a crooked line on a new ceiling... ever! Granted their solution to the velux window is not their problem, however they should have spoke to you about it and they should have seen this conflict before they started the work. Theirs has been a slapdash approach to your project. There is no excuse for not having a nice crisp line at the joint between the two ceiling sections and I would get them to rectify this. It will require a skim coat of pre-mix plaster and some sanding, however the crisp line can be achieved. Bearing in mind their sloppiness on this joint, have you checked the joints between the walls and ceiling? Again these should be crisp and completely horizontal. If this is not fixed properly then it is going to irritate you for the rest of the time that you spend in this property! Best of luck and do not allow them to compromise your project....See MoreDado rail with a fireplace?
Comments (3)Do you have a picture? Depends on the period of the house. If it’s a period home with original dado rail then I would try and find a similar one and fill the gap. If it’s a more modern, say 1980s onwards, house then you could remove it....See MoreJoanna Bradley
