Extension needed for a new kitchen but light an issue
Comments (28)Thanks for the compliment. I am not a professional but have modernised and rearranged many homes and been very successful at adding value. Everything is possible in building terms but lots of things are uneconomic. I suspect that the walls between the front bedroom and shower room and the other wall between bed 2 and the kitchen are holding up walls in the flat above. You can knock doorways in them but removing them altogether is more expensive. You should also bear in mind that as a resident you are likely not the freeholder (which means you are responsible for the whole building) but a part owner of the freehold meaning that you still need permission to make internal alterations. Do you have much budget beyond the purchase to build and renovate?...See MoreAnyone just used glass instead of velux for rooflights?
Comments (18)OnePlan did the drawings for our kitchen :-) Her 3D version of the drawings allowed us to see how it would look in real life, which was a big plus and helped to make the decision to go for this layout. Our previous kitchen was a U-shape, so the change was pretty big. Glad you like it :-) Our windows are Velux. Can't remember the size, will have to ask the other half when he comes home. They are all remote controlled. We never considered just glass for the roof. I don't know why not. Didn't cross our minds. I haven't noticed any bleaching problems, but then the kitchen Velux windows are north facing, which I think yours would be too, so the light isn't that bright. The ones facing south, above our dining area, are shaded by a big tree. You could have remote controlled shades if the light would be too bright. We have remote controlled shutters on the outside (that I only close when it storms, because we have loads of trees surrounding the house). I've included a pic of the Velux spotlights too. I don't know at what angle they should be for the self-cleaning glass to work, but I would have thought our roof pitch is pretty normal....See MoreAdvice needed for Dining Room Lights please
Comments (10)Hi. It looks a lovely room. How are you finding the lighting in general? I'm only asking as you just appear to have 3 downlights over the sink, I'd probably expect more in front of that (not necessarily in rows), lighting over the breakfast bar etc? I'm just wondering if it's worth calling in the electrician? You can also swag lights rather than the spider style but I'm not sure it would work as well for 2 fixtures. Photos are difficult to load ATM but I'd choose either multi pendants or a multi light or something that disperses light along the table like a Sputnik style....See MoreWhere to place rooflights and glass doors in extension?
Comments (23)Hi Olly, Answering your Q on my old thread. We have the same hang over as Alex although it wasn't as deep as we originally wanted it. Yes it goes get hot in summer but then we open the doors out. It's also warm in winter when there's any sun at all so so far in this open plan room, I've only had the wood burner on at night and no heating. We decided that if it's the same this year then we will just put some roller blinds over each section (or say over every two sets) which we can pull down when we want and it's cheaper than permanent heat control....See MoreTani H-S
