Design Dilemma Flooring Hallways

Top of Stairs/Laminate dilema

We have a dilema where we are fitting laminate flooring to our landing but after uncovering our stairs we would like to retain the hardwood. How do we join the two? In the photo you can see the top tread and the bare chipboard that was under the carpet.

Hi Mark, we had a small stairway (just 3 stairs) done in LVT, you can get edging strips which are made to bridge the join and create a safe edge to the step. Our was LVT meeting LVT rather than laminate meeting the existing wooden tread, but they came in many different profiles and colours, so I am sure there would be a suitable option. I was really not sure at all about having the chrome against the wood, but the options for a wood look edging strip were way off from a colour match perspective. You may find a better match in wood than we did. Now that they are fitted I really like them and everyone else seems to love them. Here is a pic of how they turned out:

Probably a bit late on updating this but I thought I'd lost some photos of the end results. I think pretty much everything has changed since those original photos. The staircase has been painted white. It took a few coats of Zinsser BIN and a few coats of acrylic primer undercoat, with sanding between coats. Gaps between the labelling were caulked and I fitted some trim over the rough sloping section before the top coats. The stringer was completely stripped and then filled as best we can - due to lead paint fears we couldn't just rub it all down. All woodwork was finished with Little Greene intelligent eggshell in Loft White. The walls are Little Greene Intellgent Emulsion in Slaked Lime. It's a very warm white/neutral. It looked plain white when it was first painted but the white skirting transformed it. It also wipes very nicely. We had the walls replastered before painting. The tiled floor in the hallway was ripped out. We now have decent quality laminate throughout the hall and living room. Quick Step Soft Oak Natural. Carpet was fitted and supplied by the same person who did the laminate flooring, a very good local fitter. We only recently got the stairs and landing carpeted as we were waiting for our other refurbishment projects to be finished. Before it was carpeted we also had a local carpenter repair the stairs which were very creaky and the wonder treads very loose. The underside was removed so it could be properly repaired underneath. I took the stupid box catch off the door which didn't work properly and fitted a nice handle and magnetic catches. We have new engineered oak internal doors downstairs which I bought online. All it really needs now is some finishing touches like some photos or pictures on the wall of the stairwell. I'm very happy with the end result.

Thanks Petra, I am not very good at interior design, I see a lot of things on Houzz and think how on earth have they pulled that off!! if i was to try it, it would look awful!! I would say my previous work in the other house was nice and family normal, but this one with it being quite large and for us expensive we want it to look that way and not just nice and normal but I'm struggling everywhere!! it's great if you have buckets of money but if not it poses it's challenges, not impossible but challenging. yes good spot on the architrave that is being replaced to match upstairs which is flat and about 75mm wide, it looks more modern. thank you again for your contributions it's all very much appreciated from everyone who has take time out to reply

Thank you so much for all your comments, really kind of you. Read Interiors will take your advice and get a wall mounted headboard, will start calling upholsterers tomorrow to get prices. Daisy, yes I do have a vax from the last house and the newer models are much better than the previous ones in terms of drying times. Vicki thanks for the name of the stretch valance as I couldn't find them on Google apart from on House of Fraser but they have limited colours and were pretty pricey at £100 or so! Angm, funnily enough I had this conversation with the carpet man as when I lifted the 50 year old carpet I noticed there was paper down and he explained that was why. He said it was also a good idea to tape any joins in underlay as well as the carpet but said a lot of fitters don't do this. Forzaitalia and Sam appreciate the insights and very interesting given your experiences Corbridge Interior design interesting point re rug and sizing I am still torn!!!! But I am probably moving towards carpets. I think the pics make the floor look better than it is! Noise wouldn't be a problem as we are in a bungalow, which is why I am concerned about the kids walking into their rooms on carpet having forgotten to take their shoes off! If it was upstairs I would definitely go with carpet! Aargh decisions, decisions!

Yes the LVT is nice but would need to board over all the floorboards and it's way out of my price bracket for the bedroom, haha. The floor I found online is similar to the bannerton but a bit cheaper (it's in the sale) but has a 25yr guarantee so should be fairly durable. It looks the same ie with a bit of the grain showing through. Was hoping for something brighter and whiter but I haven't got weeks to buy in loads more samples as need to fit it next weekend, haha
