Open shelves in kitchens - a good idea?
Comments (28)I understand the aesthetic appeal of open shelving, but it would never work for me. I live in NYC and am pressed for space. So I prefer to keep my filled-to-the-brim shelves hidden behind cabinet doors. Makes for a cleaner look. And even behind those cabinet doors, the dust can build up. I shudder to think how quickly my stuff would get dusty and grimy if it was out there in the open....See MoreIs a bath in the bedroom a good idea?
Comments (34)I've enjoyed this in a holiday let (NorthWest Georgia, USA) as part of the very rustic charming cabin decor - the bath was a reproduction Victorian hip bath set in front of a rather large fireplace. It felt and looked wonderful. But water did splash beyond the slate tiling no matter how careful we were and our hostess told us they were seriously considering either adding a 3" lip all the way around the tiled area, or removing the bath completely. I've wondered ever since what she did in the end....See MoreGarage idea
Comments (2)Hi Rachel, Here is a good website where you can find information about planning: http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/extensions/miniguide If you send me a floor plan (even the estate agency one will do) I could do a rough layout change on your specification and you could ask quote on the new drawing. It's much easier then try to explain from my experience; a visual is always more immediate to understand. Regarding the cost, think also about the electric and if any plumbing is involved. That will push the cost slightly up, also the finish (flooring, re-plastering ...) will have an impact. Suggestion: get at least 3 quotes to have an average and usually do not go with the cheapest. Web site like this one can give you a good idea of what's in your area: http://www.mybuilder.com/builders/in/uk?gclid=CKik3OW17MYCFSjJtAodB1IKTA Congratulation on your new home!...See Morekitchen in garage - good idea?
Comments (3)The kitchen extension is obviously vastly better, but comes at a cost as you say. I would consider things like how big your garden is, how long you will stay in the property, and ceiling price of the street. Personally if you decide not to extend, I would have the kitchen diner at the back (knock through the current wall), keep the front half of the garage for storage and resale, then convert the back to either a utility/shower room OR knock it through to enlarge the kitchen further....See Morerachelmidlands
