should I paint my door?

So it’s Boxing Day and I’m now thinking of home improvements!

We have a front door which is the original from when the house was build, solid wood with stained glass. I am keeping the door, we also have a porch with another door at the front which is glass.

The question is should I paint it and if so what colour?

Will I ruin the door?

I just want to try and update things, from the inside of the house the door seems very dated...

I love a painted front door as much as the next person, but your door is beautiful and a work of art. Looks like an arts and craft style door. I personally would leave it aux natural. I found very few images of this style of door painted, most have been kept as is. Here’s one I found painted, but still prefer yours!

If you are looking for a green based grey I would recommend farrow and ball Old White. We are just having our house repainted this colour. I wanted grey but we are surrounded by greenery and the blue based greys looked light blue rather than grey. The green base to Old White works well with greenery. Its also a very classic colour and so is easy to live with (or at least I hope so!). I have been amazed at how different the different greys look when put next to one another. All look grey in isolation. Together you can very clearly see that some are green based, some blue based and some purple based.

I would avoid painting the whole room this colour, it is very dark. The conservatory takes some light away anyway, so it's not the lightest room. Inchyra Blue is a blue/green, desaturated and dark colour. You could try a blue/green, desaturated slightly light version, it may work better. Here it is on one wall: And here is Oval Room Blue in a different room that looks dimly lit: They look similar due to the amount of light the room naturally receives.

Well the half wall is down :) I have a carpenter on the way to look at boxing in the pillar with the fuse boxes and cutting the step either diagonally across or circular. I'm thinking about replacing the carpet with a runner and assume I could do that with either shape? I'm either going for F&B Stiffkey Blue (2 in from the left, second up from the bottom), F&B Hague Blue (2 in from the right, second up from the bottom) or Valspar Play me a melody (first column, second from the top). Stiffkey and the Valspar are looking a bit too blue and Hague Blue may be too dark so going to paint bigger areas and see how they come out.

I live in a similar era house. Are you not actually allowed to change the window colour or is it that you don't want them to stand out? I think that black windows would look better so the darker the better. For me the first thing that had to go on my house was the square browns guttering. We changed ours to black and our painted the woodwork underneath the guttering black and it dragged it forward by twenty years. I know this isn't the answer to your question but I thought I would mention it as I have a similar era house.

Your door is great and would look even greater painted. :)

It’s not overly relevant anyway, I feel, but I’m not convinced the door wasn’t painted originally.

As for choice of colour, this really depends on your personal taste. The possibilities are endless..

It may well have been painted before or stained, we only moved in a few years ago.

I do want to keep the door and window to the side I just want to update everything!

I originally liked the door, but thinking it may need an update! Maybe once we refresh the hall and flooring it may look better?

I would decorate the hall first a see how you feel- you might feel differently about the door if you change the hall floor. My preference is for a painted door but it’s too cold to paint it at the moment. As far as colour I think it depends on the rest of the house. But my instinct would be to paint it a bold colour such as olive green.
