Glass Box Extension/Conservatory

We're thinking of adding a glass box style extension to our south facing sitting room. I was wondering if anyone had a similar addition to their home? How have you managed temperature in both summer and winter?

Hi, I've got a conservatory that faces SE and it does get very hot, not just in the summer but also in spring when the sun is low and shines directly in. It is lovely in there on the right day though. What I've done to manage the temperature is: kept the exterior-quality doors between the conservatory and the house so the house can be kept cool even when the conservatory is oven-like, the roof has a reflective surface to reduce some of the rays, the windows have both blinds and blackout curtains which I close on the sunniest days, the furniture is heat and fade resistant, plants have to be moved out on the hottest days.

The above makes it sound like the worst room in the house but actually it is lovely so long as it is carefully managed. Good luck, whatever you decide.

If you were our client, we would first assess which way the house faces in order to understand the direction of the sun and the likely impact on the space in terms of light and heat, plus we would ask what use you intend to place on the new space. It is also the case that with whatever heating - a fully glazed conservatory can seem an inhospitable space in the winter months. Even in the UK heat gain during our short summer is a major consideration and whilst roof blinds can be added - these can spoil the original design intent. A part solid / part glazed roof with fully glazed walls may be the most successful. Attached image of a garden room with a large strategically placed roof light and two fully glazed walls.

Good shout - BUT if I was going to spend any money on that complete waste of space I would brick-up some of the windows, put some sort of hipped-roof on it, insulate it, and turn it into an actual usable space. It will now stay as it is for the foreseeable future and the doors will remain permanently shut with it not being used again for 7 months (April/May'ish) time for a couple of days before its gets too hot. This is the single thing I hate most about our house, it's frustrating as it's such a dead space. I even hate it more than the bidet in one of the bathrooms which wastes space and is pointless (apart from my 4 year old using it once to wash her hands as she thought that it was a childs sink)

Thank you for your views Jonathon. So, when you suggest changing layout what do you mean? We initially looked at through our existing patio door having a door straight out to garden but decided this would limit space internally like you mention and also be a bit of a wind tunnel. So the design is through our existing patio/ a full wall to right , windows ahead and the external door out to the left (longest part). The dimensions are 3.5x4.5 with the shortest part out the garden and length along house. Leaving living room window on right open for light.

Dear all, Thanks for all your comments! Reading through them has helped me work out a bit more about what we actually want. Though we want to be as practical as possible and as useful as possible (ie temperature and glare are big considerations) we also want the wow factor to counteract the main house being a 1950s semi ex council style with low ceilings. It will be off the dining area, not off the kitchen area, and we already have full planning permission approval. I think it will be worth a fully glazed roof to give that wow factor, IF we can come up with a blind or other system to make it useable year round. It's good to hear the majority think curtains shouldn't be a problem, and downlights too. We're happy to have a little bit of structure so we can have curtains etc. The external awnings aren't cheap as you say. Think I'm probably leaning most towards something like a "SHY zip blind" motorised system or the lanternlite DIY electric roof lantern (they tell me it can fit onto a pitched roof and ballpark £1600 cost). These are internal motorised ones. Anyone got any experience with these motorised internal blinds for a larger area? do they work ok? Next question - is it possible to get self clean AND low-e/tinted/reduced glare glass? Or is it either /or? Thanks all!
