Original coving from 1700s?

Anyone be know if this coving we have in our 1700s house is an original feature?

It could be- to me it looks Regency so the period is right. I must say the ceiling and cornice it this picture looks free from any movement or cracking which makes me think it is a more modern addition designed to be in keeping with the house.

Agree with Jonathan - it looks like the right style but it also looks too pristine to be 200 years old.

Stained glass is original, we added the panelling (B&Q) and all the skirting boards and architraves are new. We chose a very simple ceiling rose for our LVR. Almost everything in my MIL's house is original, she had the fireplaces restored (someone covered the marble surround in her living room in black paint). What is your overall style? What appeals to you? Do you prefer something rather simple or more ornate? Go visit a couple of neighbours and see what they have and how you like it and then decide. Best of luck!

Hello asart Ltd, Oooh sounds really nice... What I would say is go for something that is quite dramatic.. With ceilings so high, you can afford to have something a little more opulent, that goes both up the wall and into the ceiling area.. Other details might give you an idea as to the feel of things.. such as staircases, doors... or skirting if there is any left! Might sound odd but often the grandeur of the place can be detected from other aspects.. So go on and have a poke around! Stevensons of Norwich are to my mind one of the best and given that you are from the area they are right on your doorstep!! ... They have an excellent range of plaster cornices and roses to suit the more austere and opulent interior equally.... For ceiling colours... I would go for Whitening by Little Greene. It's the most wonderful chalky creamy colour that is superb.... It's also a fantastic colour for the panel in between the picture rail and the cornice... If you are going for that look... Of course you could add colour there, in line with the wall coverings... Incidentally even if you have a contemporary interior... You can still choose really wonderful period finishes... They will add something. So don't choose based solely on what the furnishings might be.. The wood work either a chalky white or something a little more daring do.... : ))

Hello, my wife and I are currently renovating our 1930's London home and we would like to add some detail to the ceiling in the living room. Having explored our options we feel that, although lovely, proper cornicing is out of our budget, so we have decided to go with some cheaper coving from the local home improvement store. The ceilings are reasonably high at 2.7m (8.8") and the original skirting is quite deep to at 18cm (7"). Although just past the Victorian era we are aiming to subtly mimic this classic style, perhaps with some modern twists, but the question is how deep/what size coving do we go for?? Our options at the moment are 9.5cm (3.7") or 7cm (2.7")

Hi George, What a great property, coming along nicely. I agree with sksj1 - it is not essential to have one now. I would go for the picture rail now and save until you can afford to have it done properly in the style that matches the space. You also then have time to shop around and get things in sales or if you are using an interior designer somewhere in the property, they would be able to sort something for you and use trade discounts etc. If you are set on one of the two choices you have shown above then the larger one will have more of an impact - the other one may get lost which might look odd with the taller and detailed skirting I see there. Thank you! I wouldn't have clue what I'd be looking at to confirm this! Any idea who could confirm for certain?
Also, if it's not originally, I'm keen to get it removed as it doesn't fit with the style of the rest of the house. How easy is this? It's solid so I'd imagine it would be pretty messy!

Even if it is not original it might be still protected by a listing.
If you are permitted to remove it bear in mind you will be taking out a feature that likely cost a thousand pounds to put in and if the room is grand then an alternate coving will be needed and could cost another grand to get the right scale. Many future purchasers may be expecting this type of feature too.
There is also the issue of removal. This is likely a heavyweight plaster moulding held up with serious adhesive- expect to need a plaster to repair damage when it is removed which will add to the total cost of the job.
If it is not your taste have you considered painting it to help it blend in? Personally I don’t like to see bright white used in period buildings as I think it is too harsh- perhaps with a picture of more of the room people can suggest other ways of helping it sit more comfortably.
