What I do to improve my backyard and side of house

looking for some ideas for this back. as you can see from the photo it’s on a slope as is the side of the house. Steps lead down to under the pool which is a bit of a waste of space. would welcome ideas on how to improve this. side of the house never gets used but needs tlc.

Am open to the idea of using pavers with grass in between and inserting a couple of steps for the slope

I would suggest that you engage a landscaping professional to draw up plans to utilise the areas for your lifestyle. If you do not use areas, then landscape accordingly, with easy to look after planting etc. Your land has so much potential.

We're going through the same thing - have 2 side yards and a back yard, plus a pool and a gazebo, all in original condition (early 1990s) and need some updating. I called quite a few garden centers (we're in Australia) and some of them have people who would come out and do a 1-2 hour consult. We ended up having a landscaper (who also does initial consult) to come out and give us some ideas (we have zero knowledge on horticulture). If you spend on the initial consult, you may be able to get the ideas and then do the work yourself, or hire a gardner (versus a landscaper, who is going to be much more expensive), to do the work. I think keep the wood effect if it's not a mahogany colour (can't quite tell?) if it is, then replace it with a more contemporary wood fascia instead which reallly works with a mid grey tone. The grey woodwork on the door will be soft against the brickwork. You can either have white on the front block or a pale grey to match it all together. Thinking more the vintage grey rather than the very dark grey on the walls because of the side stones.

Garden rescue is my favourite program at the moment and the Rich brothers just used three staghorn sumacs in a garden and they looked fab. I thought they would manage well in the raised beds with their shallow roots. I know they do sucker but I’ve had them in many gardens and never had an issue. Peachypear many of them only get to three metres high and my philosophy regarding trees is loppers and pruning saw are my best friends.

You’ve done a great job! Although I hope there’s a plan to sort out the rickety steps (they look a bit of a death trap). I kinda like the denuded trees and agree with keeping them for privacy. For planting underneath you’ll need plants for dry shade as the trees will suck up a lot of moisture, some good suggestions on these sites: https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/20-plants-for-dry-shade/ https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=430 I’d perhaps go for a mixture of ferns, foxgloves, primulas, a creeping ground cover and pop a few spring flowering bulbs underneath. Stonecrop (lots of variations) is another plant that should cope well with little or no attention. Hope this helps a little.

How about a nice wood and slate roofed porch over the front door? It will add a bit of rustic charm, if that’s your scene. My brother recently did this with a rather plain 1950’s house he was working on. They changed all the windows to steely blue coloured frames and the front door to match. Looks lovely. I don’t have a picture, but this is an example of similar porches. If it’s too rustic for you, you could go for a more modern look.

I think the side of the house could make a cosy little area for a fire pit, but I am biased i guess :)

Fire up against the wall, add a few outdoor couches, some pot plants and you are away.
