Is there a chandelier:room size ratio???

If am of the option that there are a couple of cues to the minimum size.

If the room size is: 4m wide x 5m long x 3m high -equals 60m cubed- therefore light fitting minimum 60 cm diameter with 60cm drop. The room can likely take a light fitting that is twice that drop and diameter.

Also the ceiling rose is a good indicator- The light fitting room will look too small if less than the diameter of the ceiling rose.

The height or drop also depends on the situation. So you must be able to walk under the light fitting unless this is over a table in which case the light fitting can be lower.

Thank you Victoria. Haha! Yes that's exactly what she suggested! Several times over :) We just didn't have the budget at all to do all three floors of the house, so we prioritised the downstairs and our master suite on the top floor as they needed obvious structural work just to make the space work for us. If I wasn't being a complete cheapskate and trying to get ideas on here for free now (!!!) I'd get her to do the whole middle floor but with £100k spent already on the renovation its just not an option! We only had £50k aside when we moved in, so everything else we're having to do month by month as money comes in, which is quite painful!! Gina's done so much above and beyond what she needed to, to help us that asking for more help on a totally different part of the house that was never in the scope of work just seemed a bit unfair- especially as I know she'd help anyway :) Being completely honest, we had never planned to do anything structural at all with the middle floor as it's perfectly okay. The plan had always been to do nothing more than decorate, change the carpets and windows and put in two modern bathrooms (which would give us 3 bathrooms to five bedrooms) and we'd allocated £15k to do it. We had never done a renovation before- not so much as a lick of paint! Our old house was immaculate when we bought it and we didn't do a thing to the day we sold it having been there 7 years. This has been a huge learning curve for us and I've loved every minute - it's a world I didn't even know existed! Considering how much I now love it, it's hard to imagine that 12 months ago I'd never even picked up an interior magazine!! :) I guess the reason I'm now being a bit of a cheapskate asking for help and ideas on here, rather than employing a professional is because through this whole process and all the things I've read and seen on here a year into all of this, I realise whilst there isn't a big budget for the middle floor, I just wondered if there was a better way of doing things before we start next year! Your advice on ensuites seems very sensible and definitely something we need to consider! Hubby thinks cheapest and simplest idea is to leave everything as is now and as and when we need extra bedrooms (or decide to sell) to turn the games room back into a bedroom and steal a bit of the current very large room for an ensuite and put the office back to a walk through dressing room as part of that whole area and leave the family bathroom where it is. That way we'd have three ensuites plus a family bathroom to five bedrooms. I can see his point and would be cheap and easy to do, it just doesn't really address the fact I don't like the landing :)

Decent sized bedrooms are good at any age - as younger children size is useful to accommodate toys and as teenagers they’re more likely to spend more time in their rooms so perhaps making them large enough for a small seating area as well would be good. Similarly, a separate ‘living’ space downstairs is also useful as a play room when they’re younger & somewhere for relaxing / games room when they’re older. We’re not keen on our children having the x box in their rooms do having an extra space downstairs for that is useful. A laundry room or utility is useful for all the extra washing children create to avoid having it all around the house on wet days. Garden size possibly depends on amenities close to you (parks, etc) but personally feel that as large a garden as possible really helps with primary age children. We chose our current house partly because of the garden size & style - plenty of lawned area. Our last garden was tiered with decks & patios - great for adult socialising but nowhere big enough to kick a ball. Bathrooms - a bath in at least one with shower over (or shower attachment) for hosing children down if necessary!

I agree with Jonathan that the original proportions and symmetry will be important for keeping a wow factor. The house may originally have had two living spaces on the first floor so you could consider using one room there as a study. If you are a doggy family, a boot room in the basement might be useful if you can enter the house at that level. I would be inclined to have a separate laundry /ironing room on an upper floor if you don’t hang washing outside to dry. In a house this size you could consider a cinema/ computer games room in the basement if you would use it. Are you wine buffs - how about a wine cellar? Future owners can use the rooms for different things to you if they are generous enough sizes. It is important that you get to use as much of the house as suits your lifestyle as well as having a good number of bathrooms for whatever number of bedrooms you end up with. Do you entertain much? If so, would you use a formal dining room. Are you musical? Do either of you have hobbies like painting, crafting, woodwork? Do you collect things? If your living room is on a separate floor from the kitchen, how about having a tea/coffee making facility and a drinks fridge in a cupboard on that floor?
