Where the cutting boards custom made for the Island ?

Would love to do this for my kitchen can you give my any details about the cutting boards? And is it Bread, Veg, fruit, and meat?

I'm a knife designer and I'm working on a chopping board made of Kebony - which is wood (maple) but processed to give it some of the properties of plastic. TOG Knives have handles made of it and it's from sustainably managed forests. Some people argue that plastic boards are more hygienic than wood because they don't harbour bacteria but in my experience they get chewed up, causing a rough surface that discolours and does harbour bacteria. I agree with Mollie that wooden boards are naturally anti-bacterial and I think wood is the best - especially end grain boards where the blade goes between the wood fibres instead of cutting across them. I would say... absolutely never use glass or marble / stone as these materials are harder than steel and will immediately blunt your knives (sorry, Jane!). Wood and plastic are both soft enough to avoid this happening. The Kebony chopping board isn't yet available but here's a picture of a prototype FYI. Rob

I never, ever change mine. I use a butcher block and a huge thick wooden cutting board, only taking care to keep my fruits from suddenly tasting like onions or garlic. Studies have shown that a wooden cutting board is naturally resistant to bacteria, so I scrape and then wash mine off with soap and water after use. All this absurd paranoia about cleanliness is the product of marketing, not science, and the supposedly more sterile plastic ones are actually much better petri dishes for bacterial growth, which is why they must be cleaned and disposed of regularly. Fine if you want to keep plastic cutting board manufacturers in China working, but not at all safer or cleaner.

Thank you for your comments. We will be arranging the new business over the next couple of months. We will probably publish a simple website from where a brochure can be downloaded. Customers can choose which components they want in their Pendant, these can then be manufactured at the factory. Once made - a photo can be taken at the factory and sent to the customer for final approval before the item is sent to the customer. I'm afraid for custom made products, we won't be able to take them back unless faulty. From a cost perspective for custom Pendants, we are still working this out, but will be in the range of £100-£300+VAT depending on design, materials and finish. Shades will be in range of materials from Glass, Metal, Wood, Concerete, Plastic etc. If you are a designer and have a completely new shape and design that you want to have manufactured to sell in some volume (100+ pieces) - that is also possible. The factory does this for lighting designers in Europe. There will be an initial cost to design and re-tool to produce the design, but this will be your exclusive design. Obviously, your Pendants will be at wholesale rates. We will also provide LED lamps for the Pendants - standard LEDs lamps and also the atmospheric LED filament lamps. There is a lot to do to establish this business - but thanks for taking the time to comment and help us understand the market and any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Kitchen Island - hob or sink?

@Damian Farrell, the induction hob I've had since... what.. July or August? I think? Not that long. Took a while to get used to it, having always cooked on gas. Advantages: very quick, easy to clean, you can let it automatically turn off after a certain time. Disadvantages: sometimes the pans make annoying noises, has something to do with the resonance of the magnetic field I think? I don't know. But it can be a bit annoying. Make:Schott-Ceran, but the downdraft is from a Dutch company called Airo Design. Don't think they export to other countries. Anyway, almost every company does them now. Bora gets good reviews, Miele, Siemens... The videos on youtube show that the steam goes down and you think, yeah... right... But it really does go down. It works just as good, if not better than a regular one that is over the hob. I'm happy with it.
