Help! Need to design a very small London studio.
Comments (37)I could see a fake floor platform constructed in front of the windows, going across the entire width of the flat. At the left side of the platform, put in a storage wall from the column back towards the flat door. Then, put a dining table or desk on the top of the platform. Build a slide out platform for the mattress. Although you are only looking at a small double, I would build the sliding platform sufficiently deep to hide a full sized bed (5-6 feet). If you had extra space, you could install hinged doors to access the storage space hidden under the far edge of the raised area. In the floor level area in front of the platform, use easily moved comfortable chairs that you could just push out of the way when you wanted to slide out the mattress. (Poang chairs from IKEA would be ideal). If you wanted an extra chair for company, consider a canvas sling chair like you would see at the beach which would store in a space scarcely more than an inch deep If you are looking for ideas, consider spending a few hours viewing boats at one of the London area marinas that sell canal boats. After looking at a few canal boats, your flat will look absolutely spacious! Just curious, if you wouldn't mind sharing, where is your flat and how much was the purchase price? (approx is fine)...See MoreHelp with the design of my small 1 bed Victorian in London
Comments (9)I've just cobbled together a quick plan for you and then on re-reading OnePlan's suggestion above I realise its the same thing so apologies for that. Wasnt trying to copy. If you have more accurate dimensions I'll happily put together something a bit more accurate. With this plan you lose a bit of space from the front room and the bedroom but you turn the flat into a 2 bed, great for when you come to resell. To get light into the bedroom you could have a frosted glass panel in place of the existing window and as long as there are rooflights above the kitchen then the bedroom will get some light but its not going to be a great sunny room....See MoreNeed help for my period London Flat
Comments (14)I've been mulling over this one too ! I think if I, as in me personally, were living here, I would put a Murphy bed in the top left corner of the lounge - so I'd wake up with the sun coming in ... I'd put a run of ceiling high wardrobes with rolling ladder along the right lounge wall to the new door ... ( so it would look like enclose library cupboards ) I'd put tall integrated FF, oven and tall store cupboard the other side of the fire place ( to match the closed Murphy bed ) I'd knock down the bedroom /kitchen wall have an island for my sink / hob and to eat at - I'd put an L shape sofa in front of the fire, floated in the middle of the room as would need to be cosy - it's a NE facing room remember - then in the old bedroom space is have shower where the old entrance was, opening into the loo area . ( you could possibly put a bath with shower over - but it would feel a bit too enclosed for me ) I'd straighten the loo wall to the window and replace opening door with sliding one . And I'd have a second seating area in the old bedroom that will be the sunniest spot all afternoon and evening ... Perhaps have a sofa bed in that spot . I doubt that it would increase the value though ! As would loose the classification that a separate bedroom brings... But use the best of the natural light that makes living nicer ! Adding an incredibly rough sketch as I'm mad busy at the moment - but as you asked specifically - I wanted to make sure I responded ....See MoreNew kitchen remodeling - architect or designer? Comments (12)Hi Paula, Wow loads of great advice already ! I'd suggest you ask your builder if he can recommend a structural engineer, that he's worked with previously, to come and view the stack - it may be that by extending the thick nub on bottom left of that area marked, that you can then put one beam across to support above? ( but I'm not a SE - so you will need on site advice for this !!) I'm the concept planner that Minnie added the link for ( thank you Minnie !!) We sell purely design, no product. So charge for our services, rather than making a mark up on what you buy, like a showroom would. (We have a few types of service - the most expensive, for a project this size, is about the same cost as a good dishwasher) But that does mean you get a PDF with all the plans/elevations/colour perspectives, panoramics and item listing to shop around with, which means you can compare like for like and negotiate great deals with showrooms/studios/even online suppliers of kitchen furniture and appliances etc. We can even supply colour A3 prints, if you want, too ! So we are a bit different to a free studio service - but can work well for busy people who want an input into the design stage ( we have a service that involves you throughout the design process over a five day period) and those who want to approach a few different studios or online suppliers to quote, but that don't have the time to deal with several site visits from several designers and to sit through several presentations that are all different - so it becomes a bit confusing to see who's offering the best deal ! You simply email them your design PDF - or drop them in a printed copy, ask for their best price as you are shopping around. All they need to do initially is price it - so much easier for the studios too ! Anyway enough of the 'sales pitch' from me ! Best wishes for your project, which ever route you choose ! :-)...See Moregreet56
