Help with bathroom lighting and mirrors please!
I need a mirror for our new en-suite. I like this copper mirror but as it isn't an actual bathroom mirror it isn't illuminated - do I need some sort of lighting near the mirror? I don't really want a wall light in the bathroom. Maybe I could put some sort of LED lighting behind the mirror to get a bit of a glow, like in the picture? Or am I best just having no ambient lighting there?

5 years agoIs the mirror going to be above the vanity unit? If so it could create a really nice feature to have a pendant each side - something like the below?

Comments (21)One possible solution. It gives you the bath and shower in one unit behind the door away from the window as well as the sink and WC of course. Admittedly a little tight on plan at the end of the shower bath but your upper body and arms would be free to move over the end of the bath and into the window recess, and your feet, whether standing or sitting, would always be in front of the WC where you have more space. The sink has plenty of space around it with room for a towel rail adjacent. The sanitary where is all taken from the Ideal Standard website but you could use any manufacturer - the point is it can be done. I would also make the glazing obscure, if it is not already, by using an after market stick on film cut to size. You can get plenty of patterns or just frosted. You could also add blinds as previously suggested. Comments (4)Definitely painting the walls in bold colour would make a big difference. If you found a bath panel in a colour like graphite grey i think that would go really well and possibly change the vanity unit to add some storage. A nice large mirror would look lovely too. 5 years agoYou have chosen a beautiful mirror, well done, it will look great!. But now getting the right vanity light to go with is crucial. Because this is a retro, vintage style mirror, we think a contemporary LED backlight is not really suitable and will look odd. They usually also come in cool tones or white colour light, which doesn't go with the warm vibe of the copper. So you'd need a yellow, warm type of lighting. If you are going for a pendant, use a transparent glass shade, like Minipie already suggested. But we still think a nice vintage wall light above the mirror in a similar finish and style would look amazing. We can't wait to see the end result!

5 years agoSo I have found 2 IP20 copper pendants - would either of these work? And would it look better to have an 80cm mirror - the same width as the vanity unit - with the lights in front of the mirror, or a 50cm mirror with the lights to the side?
Just on the IP ratings - minipie pointed out that lights in the bathroom should be IP20 at least, even outside the zones - looking into this, IP20 actually has no water protection, so why do some electricians insist on this?pc re

5 years agoYou could pick a different metal or opt for black? If the grout is grey it would tie in or what are the shelves/cupboard made from? Maybe repeat that. Maybe a concrete effect floor would add a bit of texture and let the hexagon tiles stand out?
