Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Plants in the Shower?

Hi,

I've started a minor bathroom makeover and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions with what to do with this odd ledge and window sill?

I'm thinking it can only really be some plants and possibly a shower caddy of some sort. Does anyone have any recommendations for plants that would look good and survive well in a bathroom. It's east facing and has a window so does get light.

Is it best to vary the pot colour or stick to one uniform colour? The fittings are brass and the wall colour will be a dark blue (You can see a test area in the photo)

Plants on windows look nice in bathrooms. Ferns are good, & orchids can do well as they like the steam.

Thanks all! yes i am coming round to the idea of grey walls, think the stark white walls may be the main problem with the room! Thanks for the mock up MATH, really helps to visualise it. and I like the green, had been thinking of green too and that would link with the faux plant idea. Coukd also get picture of canvas with the green colour in. Unfortunately dont want to change the mirror atm, it's wired in and gives good lighting. for painting the walls, what shade should I try? a really light grey so it's not obvious or something darker but still not as dark as the wall tiles? Monica, I presume u mean wall tiles or do u mean the floor tiles? and should I paint all the walls or jusy the sink wall? only thing is the towel rail wall is such a big expanse of blank white!! how is best to sort that? maybe a shelf with the said plants on??

Thanks Sonia for the pic, that doesn’t look safe at all. I have had slate in my house and front steps for about 12 years and it’s barely looks any different to the day it was laid, so there must be different quality of slate that is more/less flaky. I have seen some nice slate effect porcelain tiles at a trade show but am slightly nervous about those as it will be in a high wear area and are potentially more likely to chip or crack (or so I’ve read)? Regarding the house plan, how would you put tiles (wether slate or porcelain) and wood across the ground floor? This is what I am not sure how to do in a stylish way.

Hi Tansy, Some great advise! Such a great platform for sharing and reviewing feedback! I totally agree with Jonathan. I was going to suggesting painting and the walls and ceiling a pale blue too. I think the floor tiles are lovely and would be such a shame if they had to go to waste! Also the round window is such a lovely detail to the room, I would highlight this by painting the internal surround one shade darker blue than the rest of then room. Hope this helps! :)

I wouldn’t be too concerned about leaving the toilet where it is. Saves money, keeps it away from the wettest part of the room & it’s a bit of a show-stopper in its own right. Hu’s suggestion is good - risk it without the screen first - if it gets too wet then add the screen afterwards. Good advice on a wet room above from Ken too. You’ll have to come back & show us the final photos Jason.

Sounds like a great idea. Most of our house plants come from tropical climates, so they love warmth and moisture. So I think they will thrive, as long as you don’t get soap or shampoo on them! Instead of normal watering you can pop them under a tepid shower for a minute or two, the plants will love it. I think colour coordinated pots would be best, but my favourite is white. It compliments the plants so well.
