Wood paint recommendations

Could I please ask for wood paint recommendations? We have a real mixture of wood, some old wood painted in white gloss, some wood in dark brown (in places removed by previous house owner), some new wood added as part of our renovation. We want to paint all wood in white so need really good paint that can be used on all these wood finishes.

We have pets and children, so the paint needs to be quite hard wearing. Thank you so much in advance.

You will need to sand back the surface of the timber to remove the glossy paint finish. Is the brown wood paint or a stained varnish? this will need to be sanded back to to remove any glossy areas.

You will then need to start coating it with a stain blocking primer, I would use Zinnser B I N, its in a red tin and available at most paint stores and B and Q too. It is quite smelly but will dry ready for a second coat in around 45mins.

2 coats of this will block out the variations in colour between the different surfaces and you'll be ready to paint on top.

I would then personally use Sikkens rubbol primer and Sikkens Satura paint as a top layer, Sikkens generally only comes in white or black in most stockists, you can get it coloured but it has to be specially ordered.

I‘ve used Dulux primer and Satinwood in brilliant white throughout my house and im very pleased with it. I just rubbed down any flaky bits, nothing heavy duty. I’ve also used Little Greene eggshell paint and primer and it is lovely paint but costs about twice as much as Dulux, so up to you!

Hey Jen, I'm still paralysed by indecision on the blinds/curtain front! Making do with the white roller blinds for now - but as the rest of the room comes together they look more and more shabby :(. Managed to choose a rug and some prints for above the bed frame so I'm making progress at least. Will post an update when the wardrobes are finished. If you're anywhere near London I'll let you know the company I'm using if they prove to be good. I think price-wise its reasonable for the slightly complicated design (having to work around an awkward narrow chimney). I've heard mixed things about the F&B paints - most of the negatives from decorators I've read has been about the wall paints rather than the eggshell designed for woodwork. It's too expensive for me to indulge most of the time but on a comparatively small area like this I think its probably worth splashing out. I've heard good things about Little Greene too and there's a shop pretty close to the F&B one on Marylebone High St so will look at both.

Have a look at Dulux white mist, it is very pale but next to white it looks greyer. I have it throughout mine and next to a white kitchen and its got just enough colour in to avoid looking white.

Hi we recommend black wood stain ronseal do a ten year ebony water based stain the wood should be sanded to remove loose paints before applying two coats any good masonry paint would work for the white on stone/pebble dash (sandtex or dulux masonry)

Another option is Johnstones/ Leyland. Good paint to work with. Their undercoat and eggshell has just covered some rather delightful 1990s orange stained pine skirting and doors. 2 coat primer, 2 coats of eggshell. Light sanding to key first of course.

The problem as 'Defined Builds' states, it's the oil based painted bit, that causes the problem. You have to really sand that back until it stops flaking, it can be hard work, it also has to have no glossy surface left on it, otherwise the paint won't adhere. The same with the varnished areas.

What finish do you want, as that will dictate the products you use. Do you want Gloss or a sheen.

I wouldn't recommend Eggshell on any high traffic areas. Gloss will be the best to use on all of those surfaces, but Satinwood will work if you use the right primers. No to Eggshell on high traffic areas. It's as it's name implies, thin and chips easily.

It's a fair point about the eggshell MATH, I don't have cute little mini me's running about the house caning the heck out of the fixtures and fittings. :) So far mine has been great, time will tell of course.

No, we don't anymore ( thankfully ), however, the grand kids are less than a favourable combo with some of my window sills, so they're Satinwood too.

Thank you so much! I absolutely love this forum, everyone is so helpful.

Sounds like there is no easy solution (by that I mean whatever we use we will need to do at least some sanding). Then, I’m hoping, Zinsser BIN primer will cover the imperfect old paint. Then the top coat paint, here I’m less sure as there does not appear to be a clear choice.

By the way, I’m case this helps others, we’ve just painted one of the ceilings with Leyland Vinyl Matt Brilliant White- amazing finish after one misting coat on bare plaster and then one more coat.

We’ve also started painting our walls in Johnstone’s Trade Acrylic Durable Matt colour matched to F&B skimming stone and so far, it’s looking really good too.

So, I can also vouch for these two paints.

Leyland is great paint. To be honest, if you do the prep right, and remove all oiliness and flakiness, any good primer will work, including Leyland, I use it all the time, that and Armstead.

I personally ( don't hate me ), really dislike Zinseer it's like painting with water, I would rather sand back to wood and take the time doing it, than use that 'paint' to go over the top with.

Sikkens is brilliant as mentioned above and Dulux make many primers that will do the job too. If you go in to a Dulux Decorators centre, they'll help you choose the right one, they sell all of the above brands.
