Min distance between gas hob and a side wall (no wall cabinets)?

Hi guys,

How much space would you leave between a 5 burner gas hob (Neff 70cm one) and a side wall? There won't be any wall cabinets round there, just a tiled or glass splashback wall on brick and plaster.

Hello Huw,

We usually recommend that a minimum set back distance of 30mm between the installed panel and the edge of the cooktop is adhered to.

I don't know if there is an 'official' required distance but I would want to leave enough so you can turn a pan handle and have clearance without hitting the wall. Space to put a pan down would also be good and far enough so you're not bumping your elbow when cooking I guess!

Hi Sarah, If these wall units are going over a hob, then there are BR requirements for a minimum height dependent on whether it is gas or elec - something in the region of 700mm I recall, but the manufacturers recommendations should always be checked ... However, if it's not above a hob then this doesn't apply! The lower the wall units the less 'useable' the counter space is - maybe try setting out the cupboards using a box or something to see how you feel with the wall cupboards at that height? Gap between gas hob and integrated extractor?

OK, so I am a bit confused. I do not want a big chimney style extractor. My range will be against an external wall. I like the look of the streamline in the pic above, with hidden extractor, in line with all the other wall units. If I wanted to pull that off, would all my wall units need to be 75cm above the hob? So gap between base and wall units 75cm? Just seems a bit of a big gap - currently my gap between base and wall units is 45cm. I will have the height to do it, as the kitchen is opening into a room with 2.8m high ceilings, when currently it is in room with 2.15m ceiling!

We prefer a hob on the island, we also agree with your husband that new induction technology will be the safest option for you and your family. The rings only get hot when a pan is on them and when a pan is removed, yes there is still heat there, however it is not scalding hot. It is also more sociable in our opinion to have the hob on the island is you are entertaining people. In regards to the extraction, you could ask your builder/kitchen installer to build a drop ceiling detail the same size and shape of your island to set the island location and have an extractor built into it which wouldn't be in your eye sight, you can also get external motors which boost the power and strength making the extraction work better. Hi India, first of all I feel your pain! My first flat's kitchen was even smaller than yours, but once I'd had it refitted it was brilliant for just me, so don't worry you will find a way to do it that you will love. Secondly I recommend that you approach a local independent kitchen designer/shop - your choice isn't just big shed (cheap)/bespoke (expensive): local independents should be able to help you design a kitchen using off-the-shelf units, so not necessarily any more expensive than Ikea/Howdens/etc, and you'll get a more personal service. Your Ikea design looks ok actually. The adjustments I'd make would be: - Have an inset sink without drainer (you can get dish drainers which have a lip to drain into your sink, which means when it's not in use you can put it away somewhere, sitting on end, so it doesn't take up much space). This will look much neater and will give you all that worktop space over the washing machine, when you're not drying dishes. Fixed draining boards are ugly things - I still don't have one even now I have a substantially bigger kitchen - still love my Joseph Joseph drainer which is quick to pack away when it's not in use. - I'd also change the 600mm door on the sink unit for 2x300mm doors - smaller doors make sense in a small kitchen. Or you might also consider deep drawers instead of a cupboard under the sink. - For extra storage, you could consider a top box over the fridge-freezer too. - Personally in the drawer unit, I'd have two deep drawers (with a hidden internal drawer at the top for cutlery etc) - lots of shallow drawers are frustrating as you can't get much in them other than the sort of c**p which shouldn't be in a kitchen anyway, whereas you can put pans or stack plates in a deep one. I have an Ikea kitchen at the moment, and love my deep pan drawers. I've actually had two Ikea kitchens so far. If you choose your finishes carefully, get a good fitter and really think hard about your design to make it work for you - ie don't rely on their expertise alone - they are fab kitchens, good quality with good internal organisation bits and pieces Your "dead" corner is tricky. I'm not sure whether the Howdens unit will actually open/pull out, as less than half of it is accessible - but I've never had a corner unit so not sure how they work. But they'll be able to advise you on that and again I think this is where a local independent might be able to take a creative eye to it. Worth looking whether Howdens or someone else does a 500mm sink cupboard too - in my tiny kitchen that's what I had and the round inset sink I had was plenty big enough for washing up for one person. Means you can have wider drawers next to it. Good luck!

Just had a quick look on the neff website installation download and for a 700 gas hob it says a minimum of 150mm is required between the cutout and a side wall, for a 700 hob the cut out is only 560mm so the hob is wider by 70mm each side, this leaves an 80mm gap between the hob top and a wall. But as stated above, having room for pan handles and space to put a pan down is a good idea. Best to look up the installation instructions for your hob model and see what it says or have a word with a gas safe engineer as you will need one to connect the hob safely.
