Advice on tidying fireplace brickwork
Comments (3)Hi Paul, It looks to me that the bricks on the side are a later addition. They don't appear to match or intersect with the original red brickwork. I would suggest getting an old blunt chisel/brick bolster and a heavy lump hammer and just knocking these off - I don't think it'll be much trouble and doesn't take an expert. For the brickwork itself you can try using a firm wire brush to remove some of the black discolouration but it may not make much difference. I know you can get some acids that clean up brick but I don't have any experience with that. Finally I would suggest getting someone experienced in to do the re-pointing which will smarten it up a lot. Since its an old rustic fireplace its worth finding someone willing to use traditional lime mortar. Hope this helps....See MoreExposed brick work
Comments (11)Bricks are a fired clay product and will give you 4 hours fire resistance so do not worry about fire. If the wall is internal then no problem re heat insulation, however if the wall is an external wall then the insulation to a new wall should meet the current heat insulation standards for a dwelling. How you meet the requirements will depend on the construction. If a new structure it should have been checked by the Building Inspector. If an existing wall then check out the construction to assess where and how it can be insulated - cavity fill would be most discrete if you wish to avoid heat loss. Traditionally almost any paint can be used but will need regular freshening . if you like the bricks then simply seal them with a proprietary brick sealant and no more painting of that wall....See MoreCleaning Exposed Brick
Comments (3)Sorry not sure, but I'm assuming there's a good reason for there being two types? Maybe its something to with fumes or toxicity? In which case its the interior one is probably a better option, Best to check with the manufacturer....See MoreInternal exposed brick wall
Comments (1)It is pretty messy isn’t it? You could get it re-pointed where the cement is dug out and redone and then leave it natural. I wonder if it is lime mortar? Or you could get it plastered and once it is thoroughly dry you can paint with emulsion....See MoreUser
