Vegan design: Crazy fad or here to stay?

With Veganuary growing in popularity year on year, and some reports stating that 2019 has seen record breaking numbers of people signing up to the month-long pledge, we're seeing an increase in numbers of people requesting vegan interior design styles, or at least sustainable & ethical products to be incorporated in their homes.

So, we were interested to find out, will you be including vegan products into your designs and homes?

Last year the buzz word was hygee or something Nordic like that ... so Vegan this year - so all those reindeer skins should be thrown away !

It’s all marketing codswallop !

Do what’s right for you and if your can, for the environmental good too. And don’t follow trends unless you have loads of cash and you donate all your old casts offs to a good charity to sell on!

Strange how veganism is now being treated like a fad. Veganism has existed for thousands of years and the ethos is to not eat or purchase goods that involve terrible cruelty to animals - in my previous line of work at an animal shelter I saw such cruelty not just to pet animals, but farm animals too, things that would make a grown man weep.

I agree with you Forza!

However I think there is a small nuance (correct me if I’m wrong): even if there is no cruelty to animals involved in an animal product (diet or otherwise), a vegan would still not consume or use it.

Hi moiraford, I keep an eye on The Gables, but they don't seem to have sighthounds very often, or they don't update their website regularly. Seems to be mainly Staffies. Thanks for the comment though, nice to know that there is someone else from Plymouth on here

Hi Colour happy Such as contrasting shapes, contrasting tones (putting light coloured plants/climbers against dark ones, or dark fences), and contrasting temperatures (putting silvery grey plants next to either dark ones or warm greeny yellow ones can look beautiful). I haven’t got as far as actual plants yet - climbers on the pagoda thing (decking area) but also lights - fairy light type things to have on in the evening. Definitely contrast in shapes - slab/slate/planting containers “Also think about the importance of diagonals to create interest, and don't forget height." Very good point - I was thinking of painting the fences black - like the garden that started it all pic - they have gaps in the slats which I don’t think I’ll be doing - I think the fences might have to stay as it but I can paint them and put grids for climbing plants up there Nk :)

Thanks for the kind comments folks, I feel the decisions we are making on this house are very 'ours' and can be quite 'marmite' :D. That's a lovely room Forza, I think it looks great as an accent wall as you have other interesting stuff going on surrounding it. Ours was a box with one way in and out so I think we got away with the single dramatic colour. Is yours Drawing Room Blue as well? I know what you mean about being scared :D Minnie101, 2 years in and we have completely done 4 rooms now (library, study, guest bedroom, dining room) and refreshed 3 (en-suite, master bedroom, main bathroom). It's the biggies that are left (Kitchen, living room, hall, 4th bedroom - aka cinema room and the little 5th bedroom). The kitchen needs a complete rebuild due to the bodgery so that won't be for a few years yet. I may give it a coat of paint just to make it look less dreary. The living room needs a radiator moving which means taking the ceiling down in the cellar. Again, needs saving up for :). The hall is a massive job as due to the architecture, there is no easy place to stop half way. It also joins to the cinema room, so need to think about how those rooms work together. The original hall tiles need fixing and the horrible UPVC front door needs replacing. Beans on toast for us over the next few years and I may be able to get it done :D

Here here, I’m a big animal lover, I’m not a vegan but have been looking at it, it is a very healthy life choice from what I can see, I don’t consume a lot of meat and would actually like to get off it, living the full vegan lifestyle would be hard for me but I’d like to include a lot of aspects of it, I feel any changes you can make, no matter how small, that help animals and the planet is a good thing! Tbh there is no worse a species on the plant than humans, they inflict more harm an suffering known to man than anything lease that has or ever will inhabit the earth! Wow! Rant over!

Thing is E D there are so many products that involve cruelty that people may not realise - wool harvesting and dairy farming for example. I’m a vegetarian and I agree I don’t think I could go fully vegan, but I am aware how much cruelty we inflict on our farm animals. Of course intensive farming is very much to blame, farm animals had a much better life 50 years ago, apart from the slaughter of course.

Beano I’m with you all the way. We are ruining this planet with pollutants and intensive farming as well as deforestation. Animals are becoming extinct due to our actions. We are a shameful species. Imagine how beautiful earth would be without humans. Rant over too haha!

I agree OnePlan - it's all marketing. Gillette have recently cashed in on the idea of tapping into the zeitgeist to make themselves a big fat profit.

We have started to eat less meat to help the environment (plus we love animals and its always torn me eating them) BUT, we work with leather so i couldnt go Vegan unless we stopped doing it.
Ideally, i would much rather make and buy ethically sourced meat and materials where i know the animal had a good life. Impossible to do do you think??

Great question! I've been vegan for 3 years now and have fully embraced most that goes with it (although I haven't thrown away non-vegan materials such as leather goods bought before I turned...). I think it's great if we all start to be more mindful of where our stuff comes from. Animal cruelty is one thing, but we should also consider human cruelty too. What if our curtains are vegan friendly but were made in a sweatshop by under age workers earning next to nothing? Then there's the carbon footprint required to get said curtains to my project.

So, I think vegan design is great, but it's only a start...

I have several animals but am not a vegetarian, I agree with your thoughts regarding human cruelty. Pleather shoes that don't last as long as leather are a massive cost to the environment and the poor underpaid workers who don't see their children from one month to the next as they live in tiny rooms just to make ends meet. I also noticed some cleaning products now labelelled as 'vegan' are in plastic bottles and full of chemicals...environment again. I remember the body shop promoting cruelty free and not testing on animals in the 80's and 90's. Now companies slap a vegan label on it and sell it for twice the price. There is no answer to the numerous difficulties our world faces.
