New UK homeowner, not sure how to plan lighting

Hey there,

I am currently in the process of planning my new home in west London and am very excited about this. Most importantly I want to create a very nice working atmosphere and I believe the right lighting place an integral part in that. I really hate blueish white lamps and thin curtains that cant fully blackout a room when I feel like it. I read up on mood lighting as I didn’t even know that term before. I was wondering if there are other important factors I need to consider when planning the lighting. I just want it to be very warm and inviting when I have guests, but at the same time I want to turn it into my own little mancave.

So, look for 'blackout' or thermal lined curtains or blinds (readily available ready made blinds and curtains are easily purchased).

With lighting, I'm no lighting expert but you will need a mixture of lighting types and you need to think about how you are going to use the space you have to determine the lights you want to use. You will usually have a 'pendant' light hanging from the ceiling, in some cases you might have spotlights in the ceiling. This is your main light. You can then layer this with lamps and wall lights to soften or brighten the light as appropriate. You will also need 'task lighting' - this could be a reading or desk lamp, or spotlights over the kitchen worksurface or hob.

In the UK you can buy bulbs of various shapes and sizes and with varying colours of light from bright blue-white to warm yellows. You can also buy smart bulbs that you can control from the wall switch or your smartphone which can change colour, intensity, and brightness, for example, Phillips Hue bulbs.

Well, in my opinion wallpaper is ok for a "clean" wall because this way wallpaper design can be completely seen, but you have a lot of doors may be the effect could be too much ornate. But if you like this effect you could set a vinile decoration, you have a lot of colors and designs, and it's cheap and easy to put over any flat surface, so you can combine it with a console as well. Can you share the measurements and the geographic orientation of the room. Is the window facing north, south? And does your line of work impose special requirements, e.g. do you need space for a high quality printer and full-spectrum light as a graphics designer or multiple pc screens as a software developer? Personally I prefere neutral / white-ish walls in my office and either white marble or wood colored desks. If you really need a colored wall, maybe a a soft beige, sand colored wall in contrast to a slightly darker but still bright wood could work. Something like this feels very relaxing, cozy but still bright to me. Personally though, I think this wall color is already too dark: How do you plan to layout the room? That 45° triangle shelf in the corner was a good spot for a small PC. But the window is quite high. You could create a small plateau near the window, raising the floor by about 20-25cm (8-10 inch). I think this change of level give the room a less deep and dark feeling.

I think something like in the below picture would look great. The dining set here would look great too. Add a white or cream large shaggy rug for warmth and brightness in front of the sofa. Maybe replace the sofa with a model such as our Delamere in a light purple velvet or any light colour fabric, we have 100's to choose from. There are some excellent lighting designers about - if this is a long term home or high value flipper - I’d suggest you invest in a proper lighting designer. They will create a wonderful ambiance and probably save you money on supply too.
