Ikea / Semihandmade kitchen reveal
Hi! Thanks for all the help and inspiration this past summer while I was desperately trying to learn how to remodel our kitchen. We’ve been living in the new kitchen for 4 or 5 months now and are thrilled with the result!
It’s been a while, but I’ve been meaning to share this - both because I’m proud of myself and want to show it off but also because there aren’t that many kitchen remodels on here that are in our price range and I wanted to show an example for others in a similar bracket.
We bought the house 2 years ago, and it's a cool funky 120-year-old home that's had layers of remodels over the years. It's been well taken care of, but the kitchen wasn't meeting our needs in terms of workspace and storage. We didn't have much to put into a remodel, but felt it was worth seeing what we could do within our budget. I did a lot of internet research, crossed my fingers, and jumped in. I didn't work with a kitchen designer or any other kitchen pro, so it was a huge relief when it all came together.
The whole project came in around $18,500:
• Materials ~10k (Semihandmade fronts/panels the biggest expense)
• Labor ~$7k
• Appliances (fridge + microwave) ~$1500.
The project took about a month from demo through completion (minus a few odds and ends).
Details:
Cabinets/Drawers – Ikea Sektion with Semihandmade fronts and panels (Clay color)
Sink – Ikea Havsen
Counters and shelving – John Boos Maple Butcherblock
Tile – Fireclay Tile, Slate Blue
Pendants and wall light – Rejuvenation Hardware
Wall paint – BM White Cloud
Island paint (and nearby accent wall in living area, not shown) – BM Kensington Blue
*The only thing left to do is counter stools for the island – so if you have suggestions let me know!

Comments (12)What a great picture, and a design that could easily be adjusted for your site, in terms of both hard landscaping and soft landscaping for a Cheshire site. The elements of slabs, wooden boards, rendered walls, low hidden water feature and lush low-maintenance planting can be achieved on a small budget. Water features surprisingly cost quite a bit, even a simple rill such as in the picture with small bubbling jets and lighting. To keep the cost down, you could look for concrete slabs, and use a softer wood and then stain it to the colour you want, rather than going for an expensive Iroko wooden board. Of course, once you start staining you will need a regular care schedule of cleaning it and re-staining it. Perhaps if the budget will allow, you could spend more on say composite decking boards and a stylish piece of furniture, and then use cheaper products elsewhere. A good Internet search will reveal some great products, but don't get carried away. Stick to your idea of how the garden should look and be strict with yourself. Comments (61)@Nekul I have to be honest, the answer to my dilemma was: I stopped shopping haha I genuinely have bought very little since making this post, simply because I couldn't find what I'm after. The most likely places for me to spot the odd piece I like are Sweetpea & Willow (not exactly affordable), Swoon and Rockett St George. I occasionally buy from Maisons Du Monde or La Redoute but both don't offer value for money (or a great shopping experience - items lost in transit or arriving damaged). I did stumble across J N Rusticus, though, which - if that's your style - I can highly recommend. My all-time favourite is still the US based CB2 which do ship internationally but not all items and only if you spend a minimum of $5000.......See More

5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago@rantontoo - there was a beautiful old built in cabinet in the back corner, which we loved but made that whole space very difficult to use. we got rid of it - which was the hardest decision in the whole process! - and put the fridge in its place. (we also downsized the fridge, the one that came with the house was enormous)
