Help needed to decorate my small playroom/spare room (pretty please)
In desperate need of help to finish decorating this room.
It’s a small side room off our main open plan living area, (kitchen/dining/living)
114 inches wide (back wall) and 152 inches in length (wall with the window on from wall to sliding door)
The main purpose is a kids room/play/nook take their friends in to watch tv, play games etc, but it will also be an occasional room to stay overnight in, so a spare bedroom (adults or kids), so I’m happy for some colour, but not too bright, and I don’t want it to look very childish kids looking style if that makes sense. I’m after something that will do for both purposes, my kids are 7 and 9,but growing up fast. Neon colours are out.
At the moment it’s just a white room. Please ignore the table/chairs and existing sofabed, in the photo, they will be coming out, as will the rug if it doesn’t go with the colour scheme.
Going in the room will be some ikea kids storage boxes on the back wall opposite the sliding door, we have loads of these, they look like this.
But will probably go on their side, boxes to go in them we can get in most colours,
I love the long high up window, and I’m tempted to maybe get a wall mural on this which mirrors the outside, so ivy on a fence or a wall full of ivy

The post/stanchion I’ve no idea about, and the wall colours, again no idea, plus what to put on the lovely window sill no idea
I have a brain freeze at the moment, so could do with some help decorating this one with what colours to use, where to place things and how to make the best use of the space,
The tiles outside will be the same grey porcelain as inside, the outside isn’t finished yet (waiting for warmer weather). There will also be a grey blind over the entire sliding door panel.
Sofa bed will probably be made.com, they have quite a few for £199 this is one we quite likes, but again not set on the colour. https://www.made.com/made-essentials-kitto-sofa-bed-sherbert-blueit doesn’t have to be this one. I don’t want it too light though, as kids may ruin it.
So staying in the room will be the tv, the sliding door, the large long high window, and the grey tiles, apart from that I am open to ideas, but must haves are a sofa bed and the Ikea storage boxes. It would be great if we could also fit in a computer.
Its a narrow small room with one large sliding door and a pocket door,
Not much to ask, ha, but you lot are talented….

Right ok, I've come up with a little floor plan with some dimensions. Now I'm assuming I've got the room the right way round so apologies if it isn't but you mentioned it being narrow so I took my chances!
For your sofa bed I've measured the made.com sofa you linked above and added the dimensions on the floor plan for you, so it will fit in your playroom easily. I had a look around and I think for what you are after, adult/children staying over it seems fine, and for children to watch TV I suggest its a good fit. The only thing I will say is that it doesn't have armrests, unless that bothers you?On the Kallax IKEA book case, I suggest you place it under the TV as you have space there. Then place the desk next to the sofa. I think this desk with ample storage will be great for a kids desk and plenty of room for a PC https://www.made.com/esme-desk-ash I looked at compact desks but they would be too small to house a PC and have enough room to do homework etc.
For your mural, I suggest to go for something with depth and perspective to make the room feel bigger and allow the eye to travel further rather than stopping abruptly. There's a couple that would look good, and Etsy has a really good variety so have a look at that:
You also mentioned that you might have adults staying over so with that in mind, I looked for some options that would be a more on the adult side, as you say your kids are only going to grow up fast!
I would change up the rug so that it feels a bit more homely but adds a contrast to your sofa and mural: https://www.made.com/stella-tufted-small-rug-120-x-180cm-mustard also comes in a grey, either will look great and help cover up marks etc but will help break up the green so that you don't feel like its all a bit too green!
In the little boxed window, you could add little cactus or succulents in the box so that your mural is doing all the talking. If you match the colour of your rug to your pots, it will add a bit of cohesion.
Finally I would add some plants as your room is super bright and will give reduce the starkness of the white walls.

Comments (8)I think your ideas are great, but very different from each other. It looks like rooms for different age people. I would think about what your DD would use the room for, how long do you want it to last her and as you say, the colour scheme (Red, white and blue, greens and white, yellows oranges and white are some non-pink ideas) I find that play rooms with lots of storage for toys, a small table and chairs (for drawing and arts and crafts) as well as a rug is what is most useful. Comments (10)Could you move the chair and side table into a different room? I'd have a full size table in there instead with colourful chairs, perfect for crafts and making dens under! I'd then a big pile of cushions for reading (or jumping) on. I'd either have wall stickers or chalkboard paint on the wardrobe doors as there doesn't seem to be much free wall space. I think bold bright colours go more with the curtains and ikea boxes though, so I'd move away from paastels. Comments (20)I don't know what everyone likes stylewise or colours but I quite like the houses on the wall in the first pic on the wall where your sofa is. The kids could update the characters in the Windows using decals when they grow out of a phase. It's only paint so easy to paint over when they're teenagers. The rest of the walls i'd do in a scrubbable paint. Where the radiator is i'd add a table like pic 2 but with the shelves underneath the table in pic 3 for craft storage (maybe make it deep enough for a games console in the future). I'd also add cheap shelves above for art and pencil storage etc with bins etc. The desk could be raised when they grow but also used as a tv stand when they're older. The eames chairs are kids one, they're easy to keep clean and quite cheap at £25 (seat height is 32cm) for when they grow out of them. I'd add a rug in the middle and the beanbag by the bookcase. You could add a "once upon a time" or a "read" decal over the bookcase And maybe star bunting or Pom poms over the eaves to cosy up the reading area. l'd add clothes pegs on the cupboard door for their dress up stuff plus a couple of toy bags for lightweight bits. Comments (19)We did love some of the suggestions above… but stuck with our original plan! Although we did change the kitchen layout from U-shaped to ”farmhouse” style, with the table in the middle and sink under the window overlooking the garden. The old dining room has become an office with two desks - partly due to COVID and the need to work from home and homeschool etc! We have also moved a lot of the children’s toy storage in here although they still bring things into the main lounge to play where there’s more room. At 8 and 5, they also actually now keep and play with a lot of toys in their rooms, so I think the old dining room will remain as more of a computer and homework room - it’s nice being able to shut the door! The ”study” on the plan is very much a workshop/gym/play room for my husband! We didnt want to sacrifice that space. It might turn into a teenage den later on perhaps, or even a downstairs bedroom for my Nan. The small upstairs bedroom has become a second office as I’m also still working from home (and my husband has too many meetings downstairs!). It houses our sofa bed too so acts as a spare room and my space to do yoga and sewing. Overall, we are pleased with how everything turned out. We quite like the option to have space away from each other and the flexibility to change the use of the different rooms. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoHi JC - I think it all depends on where your sofa is going to unfold? In my mind (correct me if I'm wrong) you could move the sofa bed around so that the top end is against the back wall, rather than towards the telly? I think you will have to have a blank space somewhere to allow for the sofa bed to unfold.
I've drawn up the made.com sofa bed's full dimensions as if it were laid out, which can go either way. Depending on where you want your bed to be placed you could have the shelves on one of the walls if you preferred it. Though I do think tucking away the shelves will give you a neater look.
In terms of the desk - if you want to place a computer on it, I do advise you buy a proper desk, purely for safety reasons. If you prefer a smaller desk - Ikea will be your best bet, this is one is quite small and has storage space

For your paint - once you have chosen your mural I would suggest to go for a colour within that pallet, perhaps one of the lighter shades as your room is quite bright so you will want to use it to bounce the light.Hope that helps!

Apologies my image isn't very good. It's just as you come through the pocket door the room is very narrow and there's not much of a floor space to play, would this work better? Or do you still think under the TV? If under the tv it will stick out and if the sofa bed is open leave very little room for getting around?J C

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoHi JC - I would suggest if you prefer your layout and it works better for you then by all means go for it. I didn't realise the doors are not bifold - so yes if you have to walk around the table than straight through, your floor plan totally makes sense. I did attach a floor plan with the sofa bed open both ways and there is still plenty of room to get out - I'll re-attach it here, let me know if you still can't see it and I'll email it to you.
In terms of your colour scheme, start with your mural first - as I mentioned above pick a lightish colour from the mural and use that for the rest of the walls.
For your objects and accessories - if this is predominantly a children's room did you want to have things that are more aimed for them? But as I remember you saying it could also double up as a guest bedroom - two are quite different! So I am assuming you might want a balance? Let me know and we can go from there?

5 years agoWhat kind of colours and materials do you have in the adjoining room? It's always nice to follow through with something from one room into the other.
And I think it's easier if you make one choice and go on from there. So let's say, an ivy mural, bringing the outdoors in. For me that would mean picking that up with natural materials, like wood, cork and rattan. I think the blue sofabed will work with the ivy mural. I'd paint the back wall a colour/shade from the wallpaper or a rug, and keep the rest white or paint it light grey to go with the floor and the blind.

I thought the shelf would give space for a computer and under it you can put the pouffes if you want to get them out of the way. But you could of course also have a shelf between the Kallax units on the back wall.

5 years agoI really like Carolina's floating desk idea, it gives the children somewhere to do homework, arts and crafts etc and maybe a games console (Although a smaller shelf beneath the long one may also work for a console). This wallpaper is by Japanese designers. I'd add more black for tables as Carolina posted. I quite like the idea of the tv wall being done in a concrete effect paint, I've added a close up picture below. I would leave the pole white personally.
i do like the sofa bed btw, it's just they're not very wide so more suitable for 2 kids than 2 adults although you can just fit as we tried it!
