Ideas needed to improve exterior please - porch & windows! :)
Comments (4)I think it's safe to say that the crux of the matter is the 80's extension roof. If you're going to the trouble of a new extension then the roof needs to go and then both bits tied in properly. The doorway through to the back garden is too close to the Front door, and the roof is larger than that of the front door. They at the very least need to be identical sizes, or preferably under one roof the same pitch and proportions as that of the garage. The porch needs to be grander and centralised. I'm no expert plan drawer by any means, but i did a mock up of what i had in mind, the rest would be down to the architect and budget....See MoreExterior ideas please- white pvc cladding
Comments (6)Don't think your house looks too bad but I'm sure there will be things that can be done to improve its look, but one sure way to make the exterior more appealing is some generous, well planned planting! Even with a (new) drive there will be plenty of space for a lovely front garden. Other, knowledgeable, green fingered Houzzers will surely be able to advise. :)...See MoreTime to start planning a garden design! Help and ideas please? ☺️
Comments (25)Oh my word! Dyson is adorable! so ickle!! Now I wanna find a Rune (his name - like rune stones.. not like Rooney 😂) sized box to put him in. Thanks for the 3rd design! I'm always impressed how you come up with such interesting designs (compared to my rectangle of grass with straight boarders I'd envisioned) I think we still prefer the 1st design in part because Chris want's to keep more of the grass. I'd be tempted though to put some sort of low fence to deter Rune from eating crops so maybe I could put some plants against it and growing up that to help disguise? I think the old paving slabs is the best way forward atm instead of the stones... I never truly appreciated how many stones there were just around the garden... just around on the grass.. close to the house and rubble left from the building work, random ones on the small remaining bit of patio that I think have been kicked in from the driveway... Ironically the pile of new ones all in one place are the easiest to keep him away from! (doing the driveway has also jumped up to a higher priority for the year! 🙈) Does Dyson like your Dyson? (assuming you have one) I managed to terrify him the other day when I tried to clear up some of the bits of grass we'd brought back in with us (despite having a treat at the time!)...See MoreIdeas please! exterior design
Comments (2)Hi! Congratulations on your new home! I recommend that you start by deciding what you don't like about it right now. For example the dark brown brick isn't to everyone's taste, but perhaps you enjoy that it has a high contrast with the pale sand/limestone cladding. Or perhaps you don't enjoy the rustic stone cladding. Or maybe you'd prefer a smoother texture than the pantile roof... Consider the palette of materials. Do you want to create more or less contrast between different colours / tones / textures? Do you want fewer materials or more? Do you like the neutral palette or would you enjoy adding in some splashes of colour? Do you like that the windows in white UPVc contrast strongly with the dark brick or would you prefer lower contrast? When you change the garage into a room that will have a significant impact on the front because I assume you'll be swapping out the garage doors for windows. So the changes you make to the form of the building with extensions etc will need to be considered alongside any material aesthetic changes - it's a holistic design decision. There are so many options available to you. Start by deciding what you don't like about it so you are clear what has to change. Then it will be easier to decide what to do that will have a worthwhile change for you. Also don't forget that changing the landscaping will have a big impact too. Adding in plants, changing the material of the hard landscape - patio / the drive and path... these have as much effect as changing the house itself (and can be cheaper (or not!), or faster, or less disruptive!). Finally if you're changing the look of your house you can also consider ways that you can improve its energy efficiency. Adding more insulation externally with render or some other cladding / finish can reduce your heating costs and make it look better and feel more comfortable to live in. BUT if you do go down this route make sure that you don't affect the building physics in a way that could create problems with damp and mould. Hope this helps and gives you some useful pointers to think about. If you need help with designing your extensions and alterations my next availability is on February 21st for a Design Day with my Big Picture Plan.
