Ok, so I've tried to delete this post as I've just picked up the rest of the laminate and think that the flooring will need to be replaced. The floor level isn't the only issue. Previous owners have welded other tiles to the original ones (which is where the black glue is coming from). Also, we are soon to be running a new mains water pipe through the house and the flooring will need to come up in the hall. We are having a new boiler and pipe replaced because it currently takes 15 minutes to run a bath. I will be contacting a restoration company today to see if they can advise.

Thank you so much Tani, Carolina and So-Real for taking the trouble to reply and for such good ideas and photos as well! I am torn between which way to go! If I box up to the window sill should I go up to the left hand corner of the room next to the current basin but presumably this will affect the basin width-wise if I do put it there? The current one is 60cm wide so I could get away with the protrusion as the boxing is already there but would it look ok coming out along there? Or as you say I could put the toilet where the sink is and add a basin on a countertop under teh window. The window sill is 86cm high and I cannot seem to get the dimensions for one of the countertop ones on Google which is frurstrating but will keep trying! In my other bathroom the sink height is 82cm so that could possibly work.... What do you think? Thanks again

Unfortunately it's almost impossible to identify tiles from a picture. There are thousands of different tile designs so you are in for a very difficult task. Tiles in the picture are ceramic tiles and are inexpensive. I can tell because of the size, most likely 30x30cm, because the edges are sharp, unfinished without bevel and because the colour is plain. The designer alternative is to use mosaics, that can provide a very stylish finish, continuous pattern and with the choice of many different colours and formats.
