I believe these doors were ordered through Goldfinch Brothers in Everett, Washington.

I too always had the thoughts that hand made pieces were much more expensive...but not always the case... And its immensely satisfying when you get the style, size and colours of what you would need... My brother in law has made me just a few piece... Very simple, for storage.. But THEY FIT. just where they need too.. I love wood.. My Dad was a French cabinet maker in the early 50's and as child I would sit at the table and watch in amazing ways he worked with wood... Small pieces he would make us simple little toys, or no's... Nothing painted. We were very lucky in our home to have cupboards in the kitchen, on the wall fitted and it was covered in Formica... We also had a beautiful solid wood fireplace... Shelves for Mums little ornaments (which would never touch, look with your eyes only). I too like to work with wood, when having the chance...memories that will stay with me forever.. (Sorry for the reminiscing.).. But yes so wish I could afford to build my own home and incorporate all the things...Made By hand... Thanks for a very interesting article....

You could always have two pieces of plain glass installed and then spray them with glass paint. Rust Oleum do a good range. Alternatively, the multitude of firms that make glass splashbacks use toughened glass, which could be suitable for a front door. You could choose one of the colours that is already in your stained glass panel that you have and have two panels made up to compliment. You are best to approach a window firm and ask their advice, because you don't want to risk having glass that is easy to break and therefore leave yourself open to burglary. That is, unfortunately why lots of people used the wire. As when the glass is broken, you can't put your hand through and undo the door!

I would echo pretty much all the above, which highlights numerous issues. There is no disputing the benefit of a senior architect where money is no object, and you are in a position to appoint them to make regular site visits. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and the initial design intent is lost, resulting in decisions being made by the builder that jeopardise the overall result. Approaching a builder as the first point of contact carries considerable risks. As stated previously, they will tweak the budget to suit the figure you disclose at the quoting stage, and strive to maximise profit - during the build by using cheaper products (typically promotion at builders merchants, e.g. flooring). Design and build companies often tend to be a general builder who has a relationship with a architectural technician who will draw up plans to suit the builder ... facilitating the project being completed in the quickest time, with the greatest profit. This will typically be achieved using bog standard products available at builders merchants. This may suit many, but perhaps the fact that you are even on this site suggests you maybe after something a little bit more special. The immediate example that springs to mind are doors/windows and kitchens; items that can be sourced at builders merchants, but by up-speccing slightly to independent sources will greatly enhance the finished result I am a great believer that you do not require too many 'wow factors' in a space. Everyone's aspirations will differ, but common themes include maximising natural light and improving the flow. A good designer/architect will prise out what is important to the client, ensure these needs are addressed, and introduce elements the client wasn't expecting, e.g. lighting, storage. BEWARE! Some designers/architects may have aspirations to achieve awards, experiment with emerging products, or simply specify high-end products for every item, which may stray from the initial brief and completely break the budget. I would suggest a young architectural practice may be most suitable for your project. The chances are they would be not only more cost-effective, but the designs more cost-sensitive (possibly having recent experience on their own properties). They would possibly be particularly keen to ensure the design intent is not lost by making more regular site visits to ensure they have high-quality projects as they build their portfolio. It looks like the space available is tight for that. If you can reduce the area of Bedroom 2 by making a recessed entrance area from the corridor to both Bedroom 1 and 2, (Bedroom 2 would become a bit more than 8 m2, which is ok for a small single bedroom. This allows you to move the door of Bedroom 1 to Bedroom 2 side wall.), then you have the current rectangular space in front of the bathroom for additional space to play with. The bath tub would be moved to the corner to airing cupboard to have a bathroom on the corridor side then the current WC and wash basin area would become an ensuite with a shower at the top-left corner? I can’t really tell without all dimensions. It might still be tight. A sink in there might have to be a small one depending on how much space you can squeeze from the new bathroom side. You also need to think about how pipes are to be connected to the existing stack, but the position is not shown. I also suspect the wall between Bedroom 1 and 2 might be structural holding wall/roof above...
