wall paper on sliding doors ?

is it possible to decorate sliding doors with wallpaper or does the wallpaper get damaged immediately ? thanks for your insight !

Hi,

I have never done this before but I think if your wallpaper is on the outside of the sliding door, this might work. Of course you would need to ensure the finish of your door, the cuts and adhesive all work together.

I say this because I created a sliding door for an ensuite and the inside of the door (closest to the wall) can be very close. If it is going to work on a sliding mechanism like that one I decided to go with, there will be some movements vertically (if that makes sense) which means it can be scrapped/damaged a little.

that depends on the wallpaper and sliding door. Vinyl might work too.

The reason that you're dad is telling you this is because of the sizes of the doors. Each door will be less than 3ft wide, and ordinary sliding doors do not slide back completely behind the other, therefore, the gap that you walk through to get outside will be impeeded, probably by around 10-12 inches. When you take into consideration the width of the frame on both sides, your gap will be tiny, i'm hazzarding a guess at somewhere in the realm of 20-24 inches. Of course it is possible, you can have them whatever size you like. Just ask the window company what gap you'll be left with to walk through ! Other sliding doors ( the expensive ones ) - push out then slide over, making your gap larger. If you can afford it, then bi-folds will work, other than that two lovely large patio doors that open out mounted toward the outer edge of the building so that they fold as flat a possible agains the outside walls. We put these on one of our builds, and it's fabulously light and airy inside and the doors open a long way out and back These are the sort that you mean, and we have put them on builds, but you end up having to turn slightly sideways to go through them because of the diminished gap!

Can you post a floor plan - a rough drawing would do - so we can get an idea of how the room works? I want desperately to say "turn the chair round so it faces the fireplace and door/window" but perhaps there's a reason why the chair has to be in the middle of the room facing a wall? I feel all items in the room are fighting against each other instead of working in harmony. If you have a sofa, where is it - or is that something you are waiting to buy once you've worked out how to make the room work? What is the furniture peeking out on the left in the third photo and why is it there where my logic says should be where the sofa goes? Why is the rug behind the chair? It all seems a bit plonked and that if it were all moved slightly, it might be brilliant. A floor plan would really help!

French doors are lovely, especially in a period home, but they do need space to open out into the garden. I had that dilemma too as my lower patio is quite small and French doors would have hit the garden furniture outside. I decided on sliders and I’m glad I did. They are our back door! They are very secure and the locking mechanism locks in 6 places so would be impossible to lift out. Of course a burglar could smash the glass to get in but that would create a hell of a racket. My sliders are 6 ft wide. I’m not so sure about removing your access gates, even with a resident permit. People do love off road parking so a bonus when or if you ever sell the house.

Depends on the mechanism but if the door doesn’t get scratched or scraped then there’s no reason why wallpaper should either. A problem worth mentioning tho is that the edges of the wallpaper would remain visible. Photo below shows a screen I bodged together from some old wardrobe doors and I wallpapered them both sides, notice the white edges of the paper. Only way I can think of overcoming this is to have the wallpaper slightly inset and paint a border round the edge. I would also use decorators varnish on top of the wallpaper to protect from dirt and and the odd scuff or two. A vinyl decal (wall/door sticker) would definitely work tho, and far easier to apply.

Thank you all very much for your help. Would it work for a pocket door as well ? (guessing that what applies to the internal part of a sliding door is even more relevant for a pocket one ? )

I think it will depend on how gap there is between the doors and the pockets. Usually the aim is to have the least amount so yes, maybe it will.
