Urgent help please. Kitchen island & flooring going in tomorrow

Hi all,

im really hoping someone may be able to help.

im getting a floor installed tomorrow & as its a floated floor it was suggested I put the island in first.

ive put the island in today, it’s panels from b&q & its 3 integrated appliances in the island (2 fridges & a freezer) so I was told to get 2 end panels, a back panel & two support panels for the middle. Each appliance needs 600mm so 3 x 600mm plus the width of the two support panels (18mm each) gave me a length of 1836mm which is what I’ve made the internal dimensions of the island.

My question is, based on the information I’ve given, have I done this right?

Presumably each door will have to then have its own little enclosure (like the unit on the right hand side of the island in the picture) rather than the doors being side by side?

Very sorry if I’m not explaining that very well, I had expected in my head the doors to look lik the rest of the kitchen when finished but I suppose there perhaps has to be a trade off putting all appliances in an island.

you've done it basically right, whether you need the 2 internal support panels really depends on the worktop you're having as you could possibly get away with not using them.

if you do use the 2 support panels, you'll have to reduce their depth so they're in line with the panels at the end, i'd also cut out a square at the bottom of the 2 support panels so the plinth can run through in one piece instead of 3 bits, i'd also make some 600-602mm strips to go between each panel at the front/top and use a pocket drill jig (google pocket drill jig) to fix so the panels are all fixed together (these would be stepped back 20mm so the door can close) and it gives you something to fix the appliances to. i'd also fit the doors before getting to far as integrated fridges are awkward doors to fit and line up as when the door opens it can catch on the panels at the side and to adjust the door you may need to adjust the legs. the final look should be all the edges of the 4 panels should be flush with the front of the 3 doors. the other thing i can see in the picture is you've put a couple of brackets to fix the end panels to the floor and you'll see them as they wont be behind the plinth.

As I can see that you dearly need more storage space !!! The Myson needs a depth of 302mm so you could use half depth tall or base cabinets or if the room lends itself to it - ie without cramping the entrance and exits - you have a full size DW to fit in - ideally near the sink and bin would be better than where it is now - but you also need to avoid putting it in the corners or when it's open you won't be able to reach across to put anything away ! Its always tricky to advise with no measurements - and no info about you or your family - or on wether you are looking to do this on a tight budget or a lavish one ! If you are looking to just do it up and sell the home - my advice would be to nip into your local kitchen shop and seek their advice and planning service as a generic kitchen plan would be fine for this purpose. If this is your home for a good few years yet - then I'd suggest getting a design done specifically for you, to suit not only the room - but how you cook, how much storage you need and how much prep area you need too etc etc - a bank of Tall units might well be the way to go - but it does take away worktop space, and the hatch ( if you use it ) - there may be other options - had you thought about including the dining room to make the space one large kitchen diner ?! Or having tall but half depth cabinets along one side to give easy access storage and a longer sink run ? Having a built under fridge and freezer or moving the current one to what might be storage behind one of those doors like Lisa suggested ? That way there may even be room for a freestanding chopping block or modern mini moveable island in the middle of the room - if that's the kind of thing that would work for you ?! Depending on what's behind those solid doors - You could even consider blocking up the back door and changing part of the window to a door and having a galley kitchen ?! There are so many options - (and so many unknowns ) a designer needs to know more about you, your budget and your hopes and dreams for the place ! Don't limit yourself to just replicating what's there !!! Hiring an independent kitchen designer isn't expensive - and shopping around can save you so much more than the design fee ! I know - as my clients tell me this all the time !!! Sorry that turned into a small book ! And my coffee has gone cold ! Coffee break over - will need to microwave it !!! ;-)

Hello `Sarah, I think the kitchen is fantastic!!! Please keep it!!! So I have some suggestions.. I think it has some great elements.. The design and colour of the cupboards plus those tiles are really fabulous, also love the floor too.. I'd keep it all!!! The top cupboards are gr8 without glass and your image is very different and dare I say not nearly so interesting.. Maybe you can celebrate the uniqueness of it! Minnie is right to suggest moving the cabinets closer to the ceiling (it has been lowered in part but I would leave it as is) easily done without damage and you can move the boiler in line with them.. .. This is a gr8 idea as it will feel a little more open and spacious.. you could then paint above the tiles a lovely warm chalky white or off white.. and any other wall areas.. It will balance the units out and I would definitely keep the colour the same here top and bottom... If you don't want to change the current configuration too much and keep costs down, I would buy a free standing chrome range oven like Smeg dual fuel and extractor Aeg angled hood and fit in same place as current oven.. Dualit toaster and kettle Bugatti Vera in chrome.. Angled extractor hood Aeg and a smeg 50's white fridge would be nice here too! With the fridge I feel it could stand at the end of the counter top.. Leave the sink exactly as it is and the boiler too, all you then need to do is put a cabinet shell and door on the front of the opening where fridge was and paint it and the bits of cabinet that are white to the shade of yellow and voila! Anther storage space for the dishwasher. I would move that metal shelf or add another if you like it.. .. Add a polycarbonate pendant Creatures by Nigel Coates which would look amazing with the kitchen.. Also the kitchen is definitely not past it!!! I do have several comments/suggestions for you. It is worth planning where your table is going and lighting appropriately. If this is your main dining area, or you plan to entertain you will definitely want to be able to dim the lights. I'm not sure how serious a cook you are, but you might prefer to have spotlights over the island for task lighting and pendants over the table. Height of the lights and bulb brightness would affect this decision. Speaking totally as a layperson, it looks like you would need some lighting between the island and the right hand side of the room. LED spotlights do not light laterally as far as you think they might and you could end up with a dull area. Finally, you will be asked if you want warm or white spotlights, so be sure you know how your choice will affect the colour of things like the floor and cupboard surfaces. Hi guys, I am back again with a bathroom query, I have an image attached. I really don't like the current layout for this bathroom and I'm thinking if we move the toilet to the wall on the left under the sink and put the bathroom vanity where the toilet currently is so that this is the first thing the person sees when the door is open. Do you think this works? Again advice is hugely appreciated. I honestly had no idea finalising bathrooms would be so difficult, and the support I have received on Houzz has been the best of any professional I have met so far so thank you all!
