Living room decoration decisions
Comments (14)My pleasure. I think avoiding wallpaper is a top idea. Having 50 samples and not liking any is a clue! It is such a huge room and wallpaper could look incredibly busy and isn't really the modern look you say you want. Downpipe is great, but I would then have a lighter grey on the top half of the walls and then a chalky white on the ceiling. The cornicing that isn't really cornicing and the other details that are above the doors could then be the same as the top half of the wall or the ceiling - I don't think they should be the same as the bottom half of the walls because, if you look at it now, it chops up the room too much - but that might just be in the photos. You can add pattern in soft furnishings and those giant curtains you are going to have to buy at some point! Here's a picture of what I did in our last house when I decided to embrace the dark and make it cosy. It is a MUCH smaller room than yours, but I used Pigeon and then a Downpipe-ish colour....See MorePOLL: What type of flooring do you have in your living room?
Comments (71)I agree! As it is not always feasible to install real timber or stone, Karndean is the best vinyl option. I am going to have 36sqm of it installed in my own place. I have direct contacts with the manufacturers here in the UK. If anyone is interested, please inbox me and will get you in touch....See MoreHave broken, dark, characterless living room - help please?
Comments (7)Without knowing the dimension of your room it's hard but I would suggest the following: Colours: keep it neutral, try not to choose colours within the yellow spectrum. Although you would think it would make it feel 'warm' they also have a tendency to make it feel quite dark. The room is too small to do anything majorly bold with your walls. I would be tempted to choose a slightly off white colour and use your pictures and a big colourful rug to bring colour into the room. Orientation: put your TV in the wall above the fireplace. Your sofa under the stairs and get two smaller occasional chairs on the wall the sofa is currently on. Also put your large mirror on this wall. The armchair you have could go where the TV is and be used with the standing lamp as a little reading chair. Windows: slated wooden blinds in brilliant white would look great. Lights: change the green to match the chandelier light, the rooms not big enough for two different lamp shades. Or at the very least a different chandelier? You need small tables with lamps on dotted around. Your pictures are hung a little too high to the ceiling. You might want to try grouping them together a bit more. This is just what I would do, but It's a pretty little room, it'll look nice whatever you do....See MoreLiving room: Mid-century modern classics or modern copies?
Comments (6)Hello Soren&faber, The question that answers whether original or reproduction is of course budget! I though am all for authenticity. In every respect possible that you can consider as a person, in life etc etc and one's things are no exception really.. I do though have to say if the budget can stretch to it. I would want an original for myself or for a client. Some reproductions are very good though, and so it pays to shop wisely! I have a mid century sofa, I have a pet name for it! (it isn't complimentary) It has two seams ie 3 pieces of fabric down the back which should be one piece of fabric really, that are coming apart at the seams as they're stretching badly, and it started almost immediately! SO... in my mind it is not built to last a lifetime! The purchase was based on what I could afford, but I might as well have put the money in the fireplace and set fire to it! I might have been warm and sitting on the floor but my sofa leaves me cold! : ))...See MoreMartha Stack Ltd
