New house - painting the kitchen advice

Hi. Me and partner have just moved into our first home together and we're going to be decorating the Kitchen very soon.

Has anyone had any experience with Crown Paint's Kitchen Anti-Bacterial Matt Paint? What paint would people advise? We're looking at a duck egg colour theme.

If you go with Dulux, see if you can source their trade paint from a Dulux Decorator Centre. Much better than the retail version. They are open to the public, not just tradesmen.

Congrats on your first together home.

No experience with that particular Crown paint but my general experience with crown isn’t as positive as with other (wall) paints like Dulux and Farrow and Ball. I got good results with some Wickes paints too. Particularly their Kitchen and Bathroom paint.

Can you perhaps share some photos of your kitchen/home so people here can get an idea of space?

You could try changing the back-splash. A back-splash taken right across the wall would look much better as it will soften the overall feel and make the room look wider. Here are a couple of photos (you can see more on our web site in the feature about wall murals). Also as tamp75 said, some open shelves and potted herbs would look great and ferny, frond style plants will add a delicate texture to relieve the hard look. Here is a photo of our glass splash back ( if you wanted to go down a green colour scheme) . It is right across a wall and some open shelves and plants above. A great alternative colour is amber/pinky brown - Dead Salmon or Smoked Trout (last photo) from Farrow and Ball would look lovely on the walls if you didn't want to change your back-splash behind the hob, and then you can add wood accessories, shelves and plants. And finally you could add some pattern- The photo below shows Ca Pietra Trellis tiles which we can supply for walls and flooring

Hi there, great colour choice, it will bring out gorgeous working tops & the bar chairs! Tips: - spraypaint not paint - get a few sheen version samples from your spray painting company & test it that you like it - they will match the F&B colour Oh and if you are changing the colour. Hi Andrea, How exciting, congratulations. A couple of comments I would make. There is a lot of seating/eating in the kitchen! Do you really need a bistro table, dining table and island? I think the dining table is a must but the snacky casual seating I think either/or! Also as a guest, I hate toilets with two doors! I always think I'm going to forget to lock or unlock them both! I like the concept of the large utility room and I can't quite read all the words on there but can the toilet perhaps stay in its current location (saving ££) and make the kitchen and utility room one space with a new backdoor elsewhere or by shortening the existing toilet wall? I can vouch for sticker tiles, having used them to cover tiles behind hob when we moved in. I bought them from Etsy and the seller modified the size to match the off size tiles we had. Very easy to use, and we had them in place for 3 years as a temp fix until kitchen was updated. Wipe down easily and good enough that no one realised they were not real. Good luck.

I’ve never used Crown, but a lovely duck egg blue paint I’ve used in my kitchen is Dulux Mint Macaroon. Despite the rather daft name it is duck egg! The second pic is my kitchen wall but it was getting dark so not the best pic.

There's an old wives tale that blue paint deters flies, but I love blues in kitchens so who needs an excuse! I've used Dulux kitchen and bathroom paint, but their new diamond Matt scrubbable could also be used I think. The latter is more harwearing if you are thinking of not having splashbacks.

I find the coverage from Farrow and Ball is really good and fantastic colour choice too. Have just done our kitchen cupboards in their lamp room gray finished with a Matt silk varnish and we are very pleased with the result

Another choice is the Leyland/Johnstones trade centres. I use their paints and as they mix any colour pretty accurately, have a high pigmentation, really helpful staff and are really nice to use, I recommend them. However, I am about to paint my kitchen too so have not used them for the kitchen yet (but it looks like its going to be Green Ground from F&B mixed by Johnstones)

I hate Crown paint. Used it many years ago. Was far from happy with it and complained to Crown who tried to pass the buck and blame me! Have never used it since.

I always use Johnstones paint now. As the above poster says they have the facility to scan in and copy any other manufacturers paint. I too have had F&B colours done in Johnstones paint and have been very happy with it.

It‘s far cheaper than F&B and doesn’t leave that awful dry line if you’re trying to patch up. Sample tins are around £3 each and a good sized tin too.

As a professional decorator, most durable paints will perform well. The anti-bacterial I wouldn't worry too much about. Any durable will wash down well. I wouldn't bother with Farrow and Ball, too expensive for what it is. I work for an interior designer from time and that's all they use. Clever marketing for very average paint. I use Tikkurila Optiva 5 or Optiva 3 ceramic for proper durables in kitchens and bathrooms. Just beware that water based paints take up to a month to fully cure. So if you get any marks, do not rub off until the month is up. Off the shelf retail purchase use v700 Valspar premium range or Dulux Easycare.
