I’m looking at landscaping my back garden. It’s currently unusable so I’m determined to make use of it this summer.

i would like a built in fire pit, bbq, patio table, seating area.

The garden is small, so would like to keep it at the bottom end of the garden towards the back door.

Budget not too much of a problem, if I like the ideas I will get it done.

Where is the sunniest point of the garden? If you look out of your back door which direction are you facing?

I’m not sure if that picture I’ve just taken has attached to the conversation, that is the end of the garden when the tree is removed will get the most sun. X

Two great points have been made, the top step has to have a use or I don't think you'll ever go up there so either a seating area as suggested or something great to look at. If water features are something you like then to have then you have many options - running down the levels with the steps or without, make the top step your water feature surrounded by gravel. I'd also make the block wall either side of the steps into planters. Hope this helps.

Prune in March. Prune about one third to two thirds off down to an outward facing bud. However, Geoff Hamilton, an amazing garden presenter who is no longer with us, did an experiment. He pruned one lot of roses the conventional way above, and the other half was brutally cut back with a hedge trimmer! Both methods did the job and the roses grew exactly the same! Don’t prune now, as the new resulting shoots can get killed by frost and the plant will suffer, wait until the spring.

Hi, to me it seems that you have a bit of a patio overkill. You need to know where you want the shaded dining area, a sunny patio area, maybe somewhere where you can enjoy a morning coffee in the sun or get the last sunrays on a summer evening. That all depends on how your garden is situated. Do you want to grow vegetables, do you want to spend time attending to flowerbeds (if you do them well, they aren't that time-consuming)? You need to know the size of the garden and draw a rough plan of what you would like to have where. Think it might be a good idea to get a garden designer/landscaper on board. I'd want to remove the lower patio, replace it with grass and flowerbeds, and place the steps from the upper patio in the middle. I think that the quickest way of making the patio edge safer for your fearless toddler, is putting big planters all along the edge. If you decide to change the patio at a later date, you can always reuse the planters elsewhere in the garden. Some inspirational photos for you.
