Gorgeous. How to seal wood counter tops with an under-mount sink??

Kitchen pros have said absolutely CANNOT use wood surround with an under-mount sink. Please, how did you overcome the water-seepage problem 100%? Many thanks - stunning kitchen, congratulations.

Using a wood worktop round an under-mount sink takes a bit more care and maintenance. And using a quartz top or granite will be easier to maintain.

However, much depends on the timber and finish of the timber.

This was European oak and finished with an oiled finish and it was long, large lengths of oak that we used to make the worktop.

Whereas blocked beech (lots of little blocks glued together) with a lacquer finish will allow water seepage eventually, and once gets under the lacquer it is difficult to prevent deterioration/ black marks.

I have an oak worktop and Belfast sink in my own kitchen. We have been using it for 10 years and it still looks good. We re-oil it approx every six months (easy to do) and are careful not to drench the worktops round the sink and quickly dry it off after washing up with the tea towel, paying attention to the lip round the sink.

I would discourage the addition drainer grooves in the wood worktop and maybe choose a draining rack with a tray underneath or a sink with a drainer attached to it.

Hope that helps. It does give a softer look and experience in the kitchen to use some timber somewhere. All granite or quartz can feel very cold and unforgiving, and in a larger room lots of hard cold surfaces is noisy.

Lol AMW. There's about 15cm from top of window to ceiling & the walls are cement blocks (so no recess space). The tiled 'secret' drawer compartment looks pretty cool though. I've got a cabinet being made in oak which will have to be sufficient for my daughter. The only thing I haven't decided on yet is the punter colour material to go with my java marble tile. So any pictures or links of suitable countertop/bench tops to go with the tile & oak cabinet would be grand :)

Our sinks were built in, but their cabinets were low and bending hurt my back. I determined the cabinets could be raised by adding a horizontal board just above the place at bottom that is indented for your toes. It added about five inches, bringing the counters up to the height of our kitchen counters. The board was stained to match the cabinet and is right under where the cabinet doors open. The line of the board is hidden by a length of wood trim. This raising up did require adding pipe to the water lines under the sinks to fill the pipe gap; moving the very large mirrors (no breaks or chips!) upward and moving the lighting above the mirrors up, as well. Took one day of work by carpenter and helper. Well worth the cost.

I think it's a fab idea Laura. A real wow factor adding unique personality to your home. It depends very much on the style of the bathroom and other finishes or colours present but I think it would be best to look at getting a custom piece made for the space. Also dependent on style but I would have the working of the basin on show below the unit. Embrace it as part of the design. I personally love copper or wood which I think may work well here :) Best of luck.

@NG sintered stone is like a porcelain and so the edge and the sink cut out will be plain and polished. In the same way any drainer grooves will be plain plus most sintered stone is so thin that the drainer grooves probably aren’t very deep or very effective. Speak to your kitchen designer to find the best option: Over mounted sink with drainer Flush fit sink with drainer Under mounted sink with drainer.
