Hi, we are currently remodelling our bathroom - what do people think of putting a shower bath by a window? I’ve uploaded a pic of the window.

The room is 2.7m x 1.9m so to me it would make sense to put the bath along the 1.9m window wall, as I think it would make the room feel more spacious. But I’m not sure about waterproofing? The building is an old 1930s building and has wooden window sill with plastic frames. We could tile around the window but would this be enough?

It would also involve relocating the toilet, which is do-able and the quote we have isn’t too bad. But I’m not sure if it’s worth it if there is a risk of causing permanent water damage to the window wall?

What do people think?

If it improves the layout, which it probably does, I would go for it.

Depending on available space you could consider a tiled ledge protruding from underneath the window, flush with the top edge of the bath. Bringing the bath out from the window, this would also give you more space standing up to shower (if that makes sense).

Then tile up to the window, as already suggested.

I think it will be fine- although I would choose as wide a bath as to reduce how much water gets on the window.
I would add that you likely will have a privacy issue when it is darker outside than in

Free standing baths are only suitable for larger rooms where you have the ability to position the bath with free access all the way round, I regularly remove them from smaller bathrooms when doing re-fits, people like the aesthetics of the free standing bath and plough ahead and install them against a wall, the result is a disgusting accumulation of dust, fluff, pubic hair etc, this will happen quite quickly and you will regret having gone down this route. The concept of having the bath with no curtain is interesting though, in a bathroom around 2.1m square, most of the bathroom will be effected by splashing, the room will need a wet room floor former, and will require that the whole room is tanked prior to tiling, have a look at. (http://www.wetroominnovations.com) I usually use their Maxus formers and Purus gully traps. you can indeed get a flexible waste connection, have a look at McAlpine "Flexcon" range, these are available through any reputable merchants, these are quite substantial and would stand up to semi regular movement, if your free standing bath is an acrylic bath it won't be too heavy, so moving it would be quite straight forward, but I would suggest having small felt pads on the feet to protect the tiled surface, also from a drying point of view, Karcher have a very good little gadget for cleaning windows, which vacuums up the water, I often mention it to clients and any who have bought one have been delighted at how easy it is to use, it will leave the floor almost dry once you have used it, one note of caution would be your choice of floor tile, you will need a porcelain tile that has an R rating, this is a slip resistant rating and would be most advised. another note of caution, because the splashing will not be controlled, any vanity or wood based furniture will deteriorate. I don't use the bath ever but I have an over head shower, perfect but if we didn't have a small bathroom I would just have a shower, reasons why we had a bath put in when we renovated was of a selling point.

If you set a 1700 length P shape shower bath horizontally infront of the window - but brought down the 200mm to clear the soil pipe - have a very slightly angled boxing at the rear of the bath ( so water hitting the tiled boxing flows into the bath ) you would have more standing room in the bath to use it as a shower too - not quite the two separate zones you are after - but more arm room than a standard bath shower ... Might be simpler to install too . If you stagger the basin and loo so there's more room in front of either, that would work better too in my opinion.

You can actually get low profile baths now - and not just ones for elderly! Might be worth an investigation?

Also - re what Jonathan was saying about privacy... you could install a blind that goes up from the bottom (sat off the shelf so it doesn’t get wet) so you get more privacy without blocking the light (if it’s during the day of course)
At night time - full blind needed unless you aren’t overlooked.

Just tile around on up to the window. Is it a wooden window frame or uPVC?

My friend has done this in her bathroom and she has a shower curtain at the back which is pulled over the window just whilst showering. Obviously it depends on the style you want and whether a shower curtain fits in with this.

Our bath with over-bath shower is in the same position as you're proposing, i.e. under a window. The windowsill is tiled with a slight forward slope and we have a waterproof roller blind, inset within the window recess, both for privacy when showering and keeping water off the window. Like others have said, some form of window covering is needed to preserve modesty when showering when standing so relatively close to a window, even with 'privacy glass' in the window. All I do is give the blind a quick wipe over with a microfibre cloth to mop up any splashes before rolling it back up once I've donned my bathrobe robe! Our bathroom is approx. the same size as yours and having the bath/shower on the window wall does seem to be best layout.

A low profile bath is an option but as long as the sill is tiled and has a slight slope you shouldn't have any problems and of course a modesty covering might be advisable as well.

We agree with you that the water might cause problems on the wooden window, but the layout of the bathroom once you rotate the bath under the window will be so much more functional and better looking that we suggest you go for it! Just make sure the ventilation is good, install a powerful extractor, tile the sil and paint the window frame with a waterproof paint and it should work just fine. Our clients don’t seem to have any problems with this kind of a solution..good luck!

A corner bath with the shower on the right hand wall would limit the exposure in front of the window. It would also make the room feel larger.

A bath under the window will only make the room look more spacious if you'd tile the floortile onto the bath's side. Otherwise it will only make the room look square instead of long. And the loo would be right next to the sink..

A good option would be to place the toilet where the current sink is. Add a nice towel radiator. A floating vanity will add the to the sense of space. There's even enough room for a double sink, or at least a wider cabinet for towels and such. Small floortiles and fresh white wall tiles throughout will make it feel like a classical beauty.

Yet, if you do decide to place the bath sideways, you could add a glass 'door' in front of the left half of the window.
