Paint Design Dilemma Kitchens

So annoyed F&B!!!

Can anyone tell me why there is such a colour difference between F&B's Hague emulsion and estate eggshell? I understand the sheen adds light to it but it's a completely different colour!!

To be fair the finishes in any colour will appear different. The emulsion is matt and doesn't shine, the eggshell has a sheen and the light reflects off it, they' can't not look different. We have Clunch on our walls and the woodwork in eggshell does look like a different colour.

The walls look different room to room and some are painted in Shaded White and Shadow White to make them look the same.

I agree it's annoying, but I guess that's why they suggest tester pots on all the videos as they do point out that the paints change in different lights.

Thanks Andy. In fairness they have come up better than I thought when I first saw the opened tin! #firstworldproblem

I would say you have 2 options: 1) paint as Pat says, but choose a nice dark matt colour, ( or I suppose White if that is you want, its a matter of personal preference), and handrail dyed and varnished MATT, or, stain / matt varnish the whole lot. Here, with discussion with client, and led by the client who wanted a low maintenance finish, the 300 yr old beams had been treated and left as natural, unfinished, and the new soft wood ( budget did not allow for oak or hardwood) was finished in stain and matt varnish - I thought it might not work, but the end result was pleasing to all and very very happy client. This expressed the new joiner from the older structural timber frame. What do you think?

Dorcas, Oh yes sorry that's great. So maybe go for Conforth White or Blackened? They should work well and has great light undertones that will help reflect light to keep it fresh looking. Maybe try a sample of those with the samples you painted of the Greys in that room? I wouldn't recommend wooden floors in the kitchen anyway so the limestone will pick out the slight yellowness in the undertones of the whites, and will help (as minni points out) to make the room feel warmer too. Don't forget to try the worktop against the colours too though as this will be impacted with what is around it :) Best of luck as always Gina

I used Little and Greene's Flat Oil Eggshell and the Two fussy blokes rollers. I did a TON of research and it was very straight forward because all of the hard work was already done in the priming. I am not sure if DIY would let you purchase the units primed, might be worth asking. They offered it to us as an option to make it right. We had paid for the kitchen before their paint line failed and they didn't informed us. By the time we came to choose our delivery date they realised that they cannot fulfil the order. So they offered us a discount and a ready to paint primed kitchen. I took my time and was impressed on the finish I achieved, my neighbour a professional painter decorator was on stand by in case I messed it up, he was impressed with the results too. It definitely gave me the confidence to do it again, BUT saying all of that the factory spray finish is amazing so I would choose that if I had the option. I have no doubt in my mind that you will love the quality and the colour match, most people I stalk on Insta are well pleased but I understand of course that this is just hear say and the importance of seeing a sample.

That's a very good question. I actually haven't been in there recently. The OH has been working from home since before lockdown and he isn't the tidiest of people, so I've left him pretty much to it. It's his space, if he makes it a tip, that's on him. However, as there appears to be enquiring minds wanting to know, I've just asked him how it looks and he's said it's okay (?) :-( ...............But we all know that a lot of blokes have a very different definition of okay to that of a female. He's disappointed with the Billys, as they're not quite up to snuff because he wasn't able to get the glass shelves during lockdown. So I've dispatched him to take some pictures, so we'll see.
