Can PVCu bargeboard be painted?

We have rosewood bargeboards which we would like to replace. They look horrible against our PVCu white windows. They're in good condition though so could they be painted rather than replaced to save money? Does anyone have experience of this?

I have used this product on exterior pvc window frames, with outstanding results: http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/allcoat-exterior/
It can go straight on to pvc with no primer required (just a wipe down with methylated spirit), and you won't need more than 2 coats.
I painted my window frames 3 years ago and they are still as good now as the day I did them.
This product is also available tinted to any colour, if you have a particular colour that you want to paint your bargeboards. Just ask at your local paint shop.

Nate thank you so much for the info, we have a single upvc window frame that doesn't match the rest of the house's wooden window frames which are a RAL colour, This will be ideal for us!

Hi, If you use an iPad you could download the free Dulux Visualizer app to look at different colours - it's quick and easy (but lighting conditions have to be good) For a cost effective transformation I would have to agree with you and most of the comments by painting the Front door, garage doors and windows of the house. (Use a good primer/undercoat like Zinsser external - shellac or oil based) I would advise all matching colours for a uniform country home feel. The olive green or light green looks nice. For the driveway you could go resin bound which is available in a variety of colours now and lasts much longer than Tarmac with far greater osmosis. Again adding the private home country estate feel at a reasonable price. Rendering comes in various colours (although it is costly) if within your budget will totally transform the look and feel adding to the thermal insulation. And most definitely some easy care, low maintenance plants and planters... You don't have to spend mega bucks! Although probably a good time for discounted evergreens? Good luck Edward eDECO

Hello Holly, First of all, it doesn't matter whether the place is done up or "Up market" as you said... Your house is your home! Budget is also not a problem for someone like me. I can create style with even modest bucks! Anyone can create style with lots of ££ and very often don't! The real skill is providing style with very little... First of all could I suggest removing the hearts.. Why not hook them on a door handle... You can then focus on the space of that wall... One thing you could do is find a lovely large mirror and hang that, Ebay and charity shops, antiques that sort of thing... I love a good find at a second hand store..... A mirror gives the eye a focus and reflects the hallway with an interesting "view" that pictures cannot provide... Or have a few smaller mirrors and an even larger one on the left wall at the top of the stairs.. (left standing on top stair) Or a large mirror on that first landing and a large canvas on that large wall at the top left.. Possibly buy a chest or something that can serve as storage.. for below the stairway there.. Then the stairs can be free from things.. You could have a little basket inside so you can fill it up before taking said things upstairs.. The crack is small but you can fill it.. and paint or remove the chipboard paper... Maybe worth looking outside the front door to that exterior wall to see if the cracks are visible there too... It is natural to have some movement and unless you can see more of these and bigger, I would not worry too much.. I like the cupboard, I would leave that as it's useful.. Also the banister rail is not at all bad looking... but if you wanted to make a change here and remove the two top panels to make it open and cut the plinth to look like the bottom stair.. That could be a gr8 idea.. So the top looks like the bottom portion of stairs with no banister but a small side panel.. This could greatly change the feeling here as it would feel open and spacious. A beautiful mirror could then really focus here... Perhaps consider a more modern colour for the walls and woodwork... and you don't really notice the paper... Personally I don't think the glass is necessary unless for safety issue (little nippers) and not so keen.. I'd have it open as it's a very small flight of stairs. Have a look at Little Greene for paint colours.. If the door is pvcu.. You could paint it with special pvcu paint.. You could do all the windows too... Lovely colours for doors are black, dark green, grey, Think of a theme you may want to introduce to the house.. Maybe various shades of a favourite colour and then work round the house... Woodwork does not need to remain white either.. You can go dark or lighter version of the wall colours... Or even a contrast.. You can 'skim' bricks by way of cutting them down with a disc cutter/angle grinder. You could take 10-15mm off the face of the brick, stick it onto the concrete lintel with suitable adhesive and then point up with mortar but the bricks will stand proud. Now that's OK if you have the equipment to hand and you feel confident to at least give it a go and if that being the case then it's be pretty cheap to do. If you rely on a tradesman doing it then there's no point as it's a lot of 'faffing' that will end up costing a fortune in labour. If I were to do it I might even take out 10-20mm of the lintel with an angle grinder and chisel and then fit the slips flush but you'd have to take care not to damage the lintel or take too much away. I think you might be safe with a third of the width, similar to the amount you can overhang a brick. Again, a fair amount of work, especially up a ladder! If you get the window company to attach a fascia panel then it would be in-keeping with the new window materials and the current eaves materials. It should be cheap anyway. If, for example, you were replacing the windows with a grey aluminium contemporary window then they might need taking out, but you're going to put in white framed windows that aren't to dissimilar to what you have already so with that being the case I'd personally just save all the hassle and keep the lintels. Out of interest - what have neighbouring properties done or do they all have the same concrete lintel?

Hello Ffion, Please don't replace with White UPVC they are absolutely horrible. You are very lucky they are as nice as they are. So my suggestion is to paint with a primer like zinsser or another brand that will adhere to plastic and then paint a colour like charcoal, not too black.. If you were considering to replace the windows then definitely don't go down the upvc route. They devalue properties... but the good thing is that yours are nicer than most! I don't even mind the window panes too much as I think you will make gr8 strides just by painting the brown plastic.. Of course... this applies to the front door too... as you can do the same... Think a charcoal here too would be lovely... 2 nice square slate looking planters with something lovely either side of the door would be rather nice too.. Will you keep the little "porch" ? Could be nice without it... I like the brick too and would leave that alone.. :))

Yes you need kolorbond, look them up great paint specially designed for upvc and offers a 10 guarantee no flaking, fading ect

Use Allcoat. Can be purchased at most independent shops. Just make sure you clean downn the plastic beforehand
