Rug dilemma - 2 rugs - how to style

I inherited 2 rugs on the pictured below from my grandmother and these hold sentimental value for me. I am using these in my living room although i always feel they make the room look too dated.

now we have moved to a different house and i am struggling to visualize as to how to incorporate these in the room without making it look too dated.

these are 2 rugs of very similar style and size - please see the pic below. the yellow armchairs, painting and sideboard have moved to the new house now.

it is a dilemma around designing the entire room around these rugs (but this time TRYING to make it look modern) or keep these in the attic.

i was also considering putting one of the rugs in my 3 y/o room but again struggling to understand how to tie in the rest.

any advice will be helpful - keep it or fold away, if to keep - what can be done to incorporate into the scheme. the pictures below is previous living room - it is just to show the rugs. thank you!

What a wonderful inheritance from your grandmother! I love traditional rugs and have a red Persian rug in my living room. My room is very traditional, but I think traditional rugs look amazing in a modern room with modern furniture. I do prefer the second rug, so maybe the first one could go in your little ones room as you suggest. However I think the first rug with the blue in it would look fab in a dark moody room with navy walls. As the rugs are highly patterned I would keep everything else in the room calm. I‘ve found a few images to inspire you, and I’m sure there will be lots of advice from other Houzzers!

I like both of the rugs aswell, my husband has one similar in his office. The first image looks like it has blue in it, i would maybe put that in your living room and possibly the red in your little ones room, or if you have a dining room that would work quite well. If you have any other images of the rooms you're considering putting the rug in that might help the PROs aswell.

I would go for a much bigger rug. Problem is they're hard to find and cost a fortune, but I'm wondering how it would look if you turned this one around and added another right next to it (stitch them.) I'm about to do this in my lounge. That is likely to be the cheapest option if this would be a good size. I'm also unsure about the colour. The tiles look grey, but the rug is brown based? Generally it's best to have one or the other - a room based around browns or greys?

Hi. Sisal is a natural sound insulator so I would opt for 2 runners as per the south surf road pic. I'd include a skinny console where the thermostat is. You might also want to add a plant as they're good for insulation. Hard to tell if a mirror or picture will go over the top from the pic . I would include a mirror by the door though, it will make it feel wider and you can check yourself out before you leave the house :)

The 2nd pic will give the room a sunny feeling coz of the yellow pattern. If you opt for a nature feeling(which seems to be dominating the room) then the 3rd rug will look good .

I would say they work if there is a sense of balance such as pale neutral sofas or large amounts of breathing space. I think a paler rug may look better with your dark sofa, but the yellow chairs look great with it.

I love them and a good rug is vital for anchoring a room. I do agree with the others though, you will have to be strict and edit the other components in the room so they do not fight against it. What beautiful keepsakes, enjoy them if you can don't hide them away <3

Also like traditional rugs, and i think using them just brings the same rules as any other. If using a specific rug, you need to build the room around it, and use colours in the rug as Forzaitalia says. So with the navy base you would have navy, maybe a bit of pale beige / to lighten,

I think you may struggle a little to tie in your amrchairs as they are very bright, and the colour dominating, plus it's a colour that isn't in either rug.

Personally I would say that if you want to work with the rugs, then i'd change the armchairs for a neutral colour. I too would go for the second rug as it's easier to work with and a bit less dated. However, yellow and blue will not work with that rug.

I love your rugs. I've think my living room looks cool, not exactly modern, more eclectic, but the old Persian rug suits it very well. I think they pretty much go with all styles
