Design Dilemma Flooring Kitchens

LVT flooring diagonal? border?

We are renovating out kitchen, knocking through to the dining room and plan on redoing the whole downstairs floor at the same time.
We're going for an oak effect LVT. Our fitter suggested laying in on a diagonal rather than straight. He's also suggested a border.

I quite like the images I've googled. Hubbie doesn't! Any thoughts on the options? Pics would be even better as the ones I've found are small close ups of the floor so can't really.gauge the whole effect

Because of the lack of straight walls and no right angles in our new kitchen/diner, it was best for us to fit our new Amtico floor on the diagonal, we also had a thin pencil line border in the diner part up to the start of the kitchen units.

I think it looks great.

I think a boarder is nice is a very plain and big room. In the kitchen I think it is a bit fussy so I wouldn’t bother. But I like the diagonal fitting. The only extra thing would be to ensure you add grout strips to make it look higher end.

We're an Amtico house (Amtico Spacia Xtra ). I love it. Looks great, cleans easily, and our is slightly textured so feels nice underfoot. Our 'planks' have very slightly bevelled edges so that also gives the impression of real wood. I agree that it does 'ding' relatively easily, but we've only had one. It's been down coming on 3 years now (3 kids, 1 dog, 1 puppy, and lots of parties) and still looks as good as new. The fitters had to put some self levelling down throughout the downstairs, but the final finish is fantastic. Expensive, but IMO well worth the money. Hi Ally, We used Moduleo and I think the colour is blackjack oak. Really pleased with the colour, feel and look. So easy to look after too. In the end I had a border around the edges and I think it looks great, with more of a ‘finished’ appearance as was suggested above. Around the kitchen units and island there is no border and it looks like the kitchen is ‘sitting’ on it nicely. Hope that’s helpful, good luck with it!

Can I just ask why you want this??? I don’t mean this in any offensive way, I’m just trying to understand your thinking? Ceramic tiles are not the strongest - porcelain would be a better option. Perhaps an even better option is to forget tile altogether and go with a Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) such as Karndean. They have some gorgeous herringbone parquet designs. I don't mind the diagonal laid LVT, but I far prefer the Herringbone plank if you're thinking of that type of style. Bang on trend too.

I assume the room is relatively narrow hence the fitters suggestion? If so, I agree with MATH, and a herringbone or chevron will make it feel wider as your eyes are drawn to the V. Also agree with Jonathan re the design strips if in budget

thanks for the replies. And for the photos- it's nice to see it in a whole room.
I'd love the herringbone but husband hates it.
The rooms are all pretty big I think my fitter likes the diagonal design as he has it in his home!
I am very much leaning towards the border where we have skirting (pretty much everywhere aside from the kitchen area and utility room) as it does look much more finished
And I do really like the diagonal pattern- if I can't have the herringbone I'll try and persuade hubbie to go with this!

We supplied and installed Amtico Form Valley Oak in a large kitchen/diner several months back, on the diagonal, with a matching single plank border.

I would love herringbone but if you are on a budget, then it will add significant fitting costs (I’m told) :0(

Think the border is down to personal taste. I find it too fussy for me (the line border - not an actual straight border plank - that looks ok) but my fitter likes them. Might be too much if you have herringbone as well

I'm not a fan of diagonally laid floors, unless the room asks for it with a wall that isn't entirely straigt or things like the angled steps as in Ribena Drinker's kitchen. Then it makes kind of sense. Otherwise I find (personal opinion) that it looks too busy and fights with furniture layouts. I much prefer a classic Herringbone, Hungarian point or just horizontally or vertically laid.

In short, up to personal taste :-)

Forzaitalia - oh gee, thanks! The colour is F&B Oval Room Blue.

The make? Ikea. We used the Torhamn door/drawer fronts and the OH used a professional spray gun and sprayed them all - much cheaper than the £50 per door that a local company wanted.

Because we painted them ourselves, we were able to have custom end panels, non standard plinths and a marvellous moveable island. We also sprayed the radiator from anthracite to blue.
