Suggestions for sash windows

Am seeking ideas for sash window covering - I don't like net curtains and would like ideas around blinds - venetian/shutters/roller blinds?? I would like to keep as much light into my flat as possible, but do need some sort of covering in place.

Any thing that has a frame that remains in the window frame is going to cut out light, clearly. However, if you want to have some covering in place all of the time, for privacy, for example you may wish to consider some lightweight voile. You may then wish to consider a second layer of window screening, say curtains or a blind that completely clears the window when not in use - a pole wider than the window aperture or a blind that is higher than the window so that light is not obstructed. This would work in a situation where there is adequate clearance above/beside the window.

Hi Kenya197 - window film is a good idea too, for privacy whilst still letting in the light - this teams with some blinds or shutters would look lovely, and means you can keep your blinds/shutters open whilst still having privacy. There are some great patterned options out there too, to add a bit of personal style.

Your windows do look fine for now, so I agree with the other houzzers, leave them and replace them when they need doing. (Just from an eco-point of view, it's better to replace them when they need replacing, rather than before - though I guess you could sell the old ones for reuse?) I have a similar dilemma, where the original style windows in my home have been replaced with (fairly horrid) PVC numbers. However, they are still okay, don't leak or mist, so the plan is to leave them, save up and WHEN they need replacing, rip the lot out and splurge on the best bespoke timber replacements I can afford (which will be even better as I'll have a bigger pot saved up!).

It is large detached traditional house in conservation area where doors, railings and gates in the area are traditionally painted in black. The window frames and soffits are currently Magnolia and it looks too yellow against the grey/gold sandstone of the building so a lighter shade would look better but not brilliant white. Then I wondered about grey or black? Any thoughts? Suggestion?

I can see that these are not the original sash windows but they are at least in proportion and they don't appear to be damaged or in need of replacement. Do you imagine that replacements should look very different? Do you have a vision of how you want it to look? Earlier comments are right that sash windows are available in materials that match different budgets so although wood is the most desirable material it may not be an appropriate investment for the value of the house. Personally I think the benefit of aluminium is that you can get very thin frames but that look is likely not appropriate for the house.

Depending on the condition of the windows, if they are timber you may be able to double glaze the existing windows as opposed to replacing them. Secondary glazing is often preferred in listed buildings, where you may not be allowed to install double glazing. Where double glazing is allowed, most people will opt for double glazing rather than secondary glazing. Repair or replace infographic Regarding the later discussions on the thread about plastic vs. timber, I would definitely recommend choosing timber rather than plastic. Not only are timber windows more environmentally friendly than plastic windows (when using sustainable timber), but if you live in a period home, plastic windows will often devalue the property. We regularly have home buyers asking for budget prices to replace plastic windows with timber windows so they can ask for money off the asking price. I'm not sure where you are based?
